26. Checkmate

Joltérax immediately turned around when he noticed Lyon was looking behind him. Standing there was a small, blue, canine Pokémon. Riolu put its hands together and a blue glowing ball appeared in between them.

Yep, that's right. Riolu had spent the least strength in the battle against Ariados earlier so it was the first one to wake up. Riolu couldn't just jump right into battle when it's clear that Joltérax overpowered them. Not sure what to do, conversed with Lyon when he was stalling for time. And while he's being tortured, Lyon kept his sanity and constructed a plan. He ordered Riolu to reserve its strength then put all of the energy into one last move when the time was right.

On the way back from Ariados's cave earlier, Lyon and Riolu had talked a bit. Mostly because of his curiosity, Lyon asked if Riolu could use『Aura Sphere』. When Riolu first talked to him, Lyon thought it was a unique Pokémon. Normally, only when it evolved into Lucario, it would have the ability to use telepathy and『Aura Sphere』.

But this Riolu was different. Lyon remembered there's also a unique Riolu in the series. If he's not wrong, it appeared to be the only Riolu in the series was able to use telepathy and『Aura Sphere』already before evolving into Lucario. Maybe this Riolu was also like that one. It's already able to communicate with him through telepathy so he hoped it could use『Aura Sphere』. Too bad it's just his wishful thinking. When Lyon asked so, Riolu responded.

- It's impossible, my Lord. The reason why only my race's final form can use『Aura Sphere』is because only then we are able to have a full grasp of Aura control.

This answer only made Lyon even more curious. He immediately expressed what's on his mind.

- But you already can use telepathy. That means your Aura control is better than others in your race. So theoretically, it should be possible for you to use『Aura Sphere』, right?

Heard that, Riolu tilted its head in wonder then gave him a heartbreaking answer.

- Actually, I tried to use『Aura Sphere』before. But I failed, my Lord.

His shoulders slightly slumped in disappointment. There went his expectance. But Lyon asked Riolu another question again, still clinging to the last light of hope.

- You couldn't even form『Aura Sphere』in a second?

- I can, my Lord. But my Aura control isn't good enough,...

Riolu frowned when it realized what its master intended to do. Lyon was definitely thinking about how to train Riolu to learn『Aura Sphere』early on.

- So...?

As if to prove how stubborn he could be, Lyon still tried to pry even further. Urgh, this stubborn master. Riolu answered truthfully, hoping its master would get scared and stopped.

- So it exploded, my Lord. Please don't think of making me using『Aura Sphere』. It's dangerous.

So that meant Riolu's Aura control was good enough to use telepathy but not enough to use『Aura Sphere』. Lyon went silent for a moment before telling Riolu his theory.

- When you practiced『Aura Sphere』, you tried to gather Aura into a ball, right? How about spiraling your Aura flows into a sphere?

Hearing that, Riolu made a stupid face. It couldn't comprehend what Lyon just said for a moment.

- Uhm, like a whirlpool. But not just a whirlpool. It's countless whirlpools with only one center at the very core of the sphere...

The more Lyon tried to explain, the more confusing his words were. Riolu raised its paw in front of his face to stop him from going further.
