Lyon had stopped giving commands to Beautifly. He didn't feel the need to. And looking at the battle, he was proud of Beautifly. Its growth had far exceeded what he expected. So he decided to step back and let Beautifly take full control of the battle, believing Beautifly could handle the situation. The pause didn't continue for long as both of them moved at the same time. Dratini shouted and a light blue ball was formed in front of its forehead. When icy cold energy was gathered enough, Dratini shot a light blue beam at its opponent. Beautifly responded by spreading light blue energy and forming a mirrory barrier in front. Lyon once told Beautifly that it could creatively control Psychic however it wanted. This was an imitation of Mirror Coat that Beautifly had practiced before. He just didn't think it had already completed the technique.

Ice Beam hit the glistening barrier. And because this was only an imitation, its function just partly resembled Mirror Coat. Its main purpose was guarding, Beautifly didn't have to get hit. As for the retaliation, its power was decreased and it only worked against moves that could be 'reflected' like Flash, Flash Cannon, Zap Cannon, Dynamax Cannon, Fleur Cannon, Confuse Ray, Moonblast, Spotlight, Light of Ruin, Photon Geyser, Prismatic Laser, Light That Burns the Sky, Luster Purge,... or the beam moves: Aurora Beam, Dazzling Beam, Bubble Beam, Psybeam, Signal Beam, Solar Beam, Hyper Beam, etc. Well, those were only theories though. If Beautifly was overpowered, being able to maintain the barrier would already be a blessing. When they collided, a lot of energy dissipated. Only around 70% of Ice Beam reflected back to Dratini. Lyon hoped that it could improve because he remembered mirrors reflected between 85% and 99.9% of the light which was incident on them.

Dratini was a bit frightened when seeing its move was thrown back. It thought of evading, but the reflected beam was too fast. Dratini quickly opened its mouth and released a scarlet stream of fire against the incoming beam. When Ice Beam and Flamethrower collided, steams erupted while the energy was dissipating.

Dratini had quickly regained its composure, seeing the gears of its plan were finally clicked. Beautifly could also feel something wrong with the situation. Energy in the air wildly danced and converged towards Dratini's forehead before it released a powerful bolt of yellow electricity at Beautifly. The problem was the high humidity caused by the collision of Ice Beam and Flamethrower. The area was under the similar effect of Rain Dance. Lyon saw Thunder become more active and realized the most important issue was now Thunder had a chance to bypass Protect. He was amazed by this situation. Dratini had shown him its prodigious intelligence.

Beautifly was perplexed by the sudden turn of events. Right now all it could think of was to use Psychic to block the attack and clearly, that wasn't enough. Beautifly glanced at its Trainer, seeking for help. Even though Lyon knew Beautifly wouldn't be down with just Thunder, it was still embarrassing to invite Dratini afterwards. Lyon told himself he had to think of a solution quickly but he didn't have much time. He just shouted the first thought coming to his mind.

-Psychic, Protect.

Lyon and Beautifly had once experimented on merging Psychic and Protect but they just didn't mix and layering Psychic and Protect on each other was excessive so Lyon had decided to drop the experiment. But right now his only solution was hoping for a fluke to happen. Not having various powerful moves was a flaw that Lyon should have noticed and considered a way to fix a long time ago. He had thought Solar Beam was quite enough and because Beautifly didn't have the affinity for Hyper Beam, he pushed back the class for later. Now in the situation where Beautifly couldn't use Solar Beam so sudden because it was a one-turn-delay move and Beautifly hadn't had any intention to use it as it wasn't effective on Dratini, Lyon found out that aside from Solar Beam and Hyper Beam, Beautifly didn't have any powerful moves on par with Thunder to confront Dratini head-on. The lack of powerful moves had been a big issue when Lyon played with Beautifly on the team back then. But never in his imagination that Lyon had to face this problem in real life.

Beautifly was performing both moves with all its might. Looking at the posture of how Thunder pierced through the air, there was a pretty high chance it would bypass Protect. Beautifly also knew that. It yelled while trying to push light blue energy into the already formed barrier. As if here it came an answer to his prayer, Lyon could see green and blue energy start to mix at the last minute. That was already enough. As Thunder crashed into the cyan barrier, it couldn't move any inches forwards. They were pushing and pulling for a while before they both dissipated.

After releasing Thunder, Dratini couldn't help but stop to pant heavily. Performing a series of powerful moves rapidly was overdriven even for the dragon-type Pokémon. While Dratini was panting, Beautifly also paused to catch a breath but it appeared to still have abundant stamina. After a while, Beautifly planned to continue and perform Morning Sun as it remembered the purpose of this battle was to show Dratini how strong it could become. But before Beautifly had the chance to do so, Dratini said something. Beautifly stopped after hearing so, flew back and alighted on Deerling's head. The sunlight was sparkling on its body as it regained stamina through Morning Sun.

Lyon understood that Dratini had conceded and agreed to join him. It seemed very satisfied with his now Trainer as Lyon had done a magnificent job in training Beautifly, judging from it appeared to haven't used its full strength and still had a lot of stamina left. Lyon was also very glad to have Dratini and put on a big smile on his face.

Dratini looked at the hand that was raised in front of it and turned to look at Lyon again. Then it nudged the hand with its head, appeared to be fond of what he just said. Lyon was elated by its response. He introduced Dratini to the rest of the members and the group warmly gave Dratini a big welcome.
