Chapter 10-9 /  'My Dear Amy'
By; mike hurley

Jack climbed part way up the hayloft ladder.
He told Lyndy he was sorry; she threw a hay bale down on him.

Amy was angry with Tim, she glared at him and asked; where were you the night my mother died??

Ty paused for a moment, gathered all his strength and hit Send.

Ty stepped into Fire Station # 1. Jim spotted him and hurried over. They shook hands; Jim thanked him for signing on. He asked how Amy was. Ty didn't answer, but asked where he could stow his gear. Jim had a feeling something was not quite right with Ty, as he led him over to an engine.  Ty followed Jim to a large yellow fire engine. It was the strangest looking fire engine he had ever seen. The logo written on the side, behind the entrance door read:

                      FIRE DEPARTMENT
                      LONDON, ONTARIO
                              EST: 1842

Ty noticed right away the V12 emblem by the engine. The exterior sheet metal was lightly dimpled; not smooth and the yellow paint reflected light at different angles and various colors; causing the vehicle to shimmer and give off an odd rainbow of colors. The extra large and tall tires were a dark green color and were labeled with:  Firestone / Mercury - 3000.

Ty followed Jim inside, the rigs interior seemed to be a cross between a submarine and Winnebago RV. The door was almost a foot thick, and had a lever to close it, like on a jetliner. They walked down a hallway. Jim stopped at a sleeping compartment area. 6 bunks were stacked from floor to ceiling on
each side of the hallway. Jim opened a small compartment measuring about 1 1/2 meters square; it was a storage locker about 1 meter deep. Ty set his bags inside. Jim opened a curtain on bunk 7, smiled, pointed and said; home sweet home!! You're in the navy now!!
Behind the sleeping compartment were two 3 meter long dining/multi purpose tables. One on each side of the rig. Benches wrapped the tables on 3 sides, the hallway sides were open. Two tv's hung from the ceiling, and a window on each side brought in light. They continued to the rear, and walked through a large and elaborate galley area. 2 large refrigerators, 2 standard ovens, 6 burner stove, 2 microwaves, a double sink on each side of the hallway, an 8 qt red Kitchen Aid mixer was bolted to the left side countertop, an 8 slice toaster set down in a recessed area on the right side of hallway. Lots of cupboards and drawers that all snapped shut. Everything was stainless steel. About 15 drawings and crayon colored papers adorned the refrigerators. A sign up next to a clock at the rear near the ceiling said: 'CLEAN UP YOUR MESS OR YOUR MAMA WILL CHEW YOUR ASS!!

They stopped just after the galley. Ty stepped aside to let several men walk by. Jim
Entered a small office, talking to a gray haired gentleman with the word Captain embroidered on his t-shirt pocket. The Captain pushed a keyboard back into a stowed panel, stood up, reached out and shook Ty's hand. Jim introduced him as Harry Knox from London. Harry was a chatterbox and within 5 minutes discussed how the Detroit Red Wings sucked to his favorite brand of macaroni & and cheese. Ty noticed a Red Wings flyer proudly displayed above the Captains desk. Ty asked him what that was all about, if he hated the Wings. Oh that!! He rolled his eyes and said his grandmother lived in Dearborn, Michigan and insisted he hang it there or she will disown me. I think she wears ice skates to church. Ty laughed.
