Chapter 6~ Called a 'Fridge'

BRADIE P.O.V.

Shaun and I chilled in May’s theatre room watching horror movies. We were watching Saw. I heard the door unlock and I heard May’s voice. She seemed tired and needed a good nights sleep, she had never left the hospital, I offered to stay the night with Danni but she refused.

“Danni, come here,” said May. “Hey Bradie!” she added.

“Danni love, I want you to look in here, this big shiny thing, it’s what we call a fridge,”

May opened the door.

“Now tell me what you see?” asked May.

I wondered where this exercise was going, I was utterly curious.

“Food and drink,” Said Danni.

“Exactly, and that’s the reason why you fainted, your body is malnourished, look at your cheekbones they are poking through that frail skin. You know the less you eat, the more you are at risk of immunity failure. You just had your first glimpse of what you’re going to end up like, in hospital, sitting there with an IV filled with vitamin and minerals, they are going to keep feeding you drugs but sooner or later your body will be too weak to fight.”

I watched Danni’s face watch the food, her eyes searching the food. Looking shocked as May described her future. She turned to me.

“Bradie, what’s your future plans?” she asked me.

“To play in a band,” I said automatically.

“Danni, what are your future plans?” she asked Danni.

 “To become a journalist,” I said.

“There you are, your final goal, now let’s build stepping stones. First goal to reach that?” asked May.

“To go to school?” said Danni.

“Ok, we’ll enrole you tomorrow, but if you want a job like that you have to be healthy,” said May.

May shut the fridge door. This was a clever exercise.

“Look, we’re going to eat a salad together, all three of us. Bradie needs to lose some weight and you need to gain some. Therefore all of us together can do it!”

I looked at May, a look of horror and a little death glare. Shaun came out of the theatre room and saw me standing there.

“Bradie, you chicken!” said Shaun.

“What?” I said in defence.

“Couldn’t handle it could you?” Shaun teased.

“No, I just wanted to make sure May and Danni were ok!” said Bradie.

“Chicken!” Shaun spat at me and turned to May and Danni, “so you must be troll face girl, nice!”

Shaun, he was just as bad as Andy sometimes.

“Yeah, um Bradie, do you mind if I have a private chat in my room?” asked Danni.

“Sure,” I said.

I followed her up to the spare room that now had been deemed hers, she sat down on her bed and I sat down next to her. She had the teddy that Andy, Shaun and I had bought her in her arms. The troll face teddy.

“Um, thankyou, I know it must have been scary for you, I heard everything, you calling May, I wanted to tell you everything, tell you I was ok. But after that experience I now know that I have a problem. I’m sorry, i’m rambling on, it’s just you remind me so much of my friend back in Perth. So uh, thankyou!”

She gave me a hug, it was nice. Actually it was more than nice, I felt like I didn’t want to let her go.

“It’s ok, if you ever want to chat, you can catch me next door or here’s my number,”

I wrote down my number on a piece of paper. I gave it to her, she was still hugging the troll face teddy, and it had been Andy’s idea. He couldn’t stop laughing after I had told him. Neither could I, I had to turn and face the hospital bleak walls to stop myself.

“Shaun, no!” Called May.

Shaun came busting into Danni’s room and sat down on the other side of Danni.

“So I’m Shaun,” He shook her hand and turned it over and kissed it. What a tool!

“Danni,” she said back. May came into Danni’s room.

 “Dear me, I’m sorry guys, Shaun just has to be involved. Mr have-a-chat!” May said, chucking teddy in his direction and it hit him square on his head.

Shaun grabbed the Teddy and threw it back at May, his aim off and missed May completely. Danni was laughing and so was May, I just kept thinking about Shaun being a complete maniac, how could he miss from there?

“Lunch guys,” Said May.

We followed May to the table; Looks like Andy came to join us too. He was waiting patiently in the kitchen eyes staring off into the distance. We all sat down at the table, our food all in front of us. Shaun and Andy both with Baked Bean toasties and May, Danni and I had a salad.
