"W-what do you mean?"
Jimin instinctively covered his body with his hands, as his mind raced with fear and anxiety. Dark thoughts filled his head. Maybe he wants to hurt me, to rape me, he thought, biting his lip nervously. The idea terrified him, though he couldn’t fully understand why his mind had jumped to such a conclusion. But looking at the way Mr. Kim stared at him, with that unsettling smirk and his bold demeanor, Jimin felt certain that anyone in his shoes would be thinking the same thing.
But then, out of nowhere, a loud, booming laugh echoed through the room.
Jimin blinked, stunned, as he watched Mr.Kim collapse onto the floor, laughing so hard that his whole body shook. He was rolling around, clutching his sides, as if he had just heard the funniest joke in the world.
“You should see your face!” Mr.Kim choked out between bouts of laughter, his eyes gleaming with amusement.
Jimin, feeling both confused and embarrassed, instinctively brought his hands to his cheeks. “That was... a joke?”
Mr.Kim, still grinning, sat up and wiped a tear from his eye. “You’re thinking way too far ahead.”
Jimin’s tension eased, but only slightly. He was still wary, and the whole situation felt bizarre. Mr.Kim got to his feet and walked toward the closet, his movements casual and relaxed, as if they were old friends. Jimin’s eyes followed him warily, unsure of what to make of the CEO's son.
“Do you want to watch me change my clothes?” Mr.Kim asked teasingly, casting a playful glance over his shoulder.
“N-n-no!” Jimin stammered, quickly turning his back to Mr.Kim, his face flushed with embarrassment. Why is this guy acting so familiar with me? It was like Mr.Kim was completely ignoring the fact that they’d only just met.
After a moment, Jimin heard Mr.Kim's voice again, soft and casual. “I want you to be my boyfriend.”
“What?” Jimin spun around, eyes wide in shock. His heart raced as he tried to process what he had just heard.
Mr.Kim's expression was mischievous, his lips curving into a grin. “Relax, it’s a joke. But your reaction—priceless. You’re so cute when you’re flustered.”
Jimin’s face turned bright red. He had no idea how to respond. Compliments weren’t something he was used to, especially from someone like Mr.Kim. The last time someone had called him cute, it was his older brother.
As if bored with his own game, Mr.Kim flopped down on the sofa, picking up his phone and scrolling through it, as though Jimin were no longer even in the room. Meanwhile, Jimin stood frozen in place, his face still flushed from the unexpected compliment.
What am I even doing here? Jimin thought to himself. He wasn’t sure why Mr.Kim had summoned him in the first place, and now, after being subjected to this weird back-and-forth, he felt more confused than ever."Urmmm, sir..." Jimin started, hesitant to speak.
"Yes?" Mr.Kim responded lazily, his eyes now focused on the television.
“Do you really need me here?”
Jimin didn’t see the point in staying any longer. The longer he stood there, the more awkward and uncomfortable he felt. He was itching to leave.
Mr.Kim glanced at him briefly before shrugging. “Oh, right. I kind of forgot you were still here.”
Forgot? Jimin’s inner monologue flared up in disbelief. I’ve been standing here the whole time, and now you realize? He was fuming inside, but he kept his composure. Barely.
"You’re going to be my..." Mr.Kim started, trailing off deliberately, as if savoring the moment.
"My... what?" Jimin asked cautiously, not liking the suspense.
Mr.Kim smirked, locking eyes with Jimin again. “Secretary.”
Jimin’s jaw nearly dropped. “Secretary? Are you crazy? I’m a receptionist, not a secretary. And why me? This is ridiculous! You could ask literally anyone else. Why do I have to—”
Jimin hadn’t realized how fast he was talking until Mr.Kim, now standing directly in front of him, gently placed a hand over his mouth.
“Shhh,” Mr.Kim said, amused. “You really don’t know how to stop, do you? You talk way too much.”
Jimin’s eyes widened at the sudden closeness, and he quickly pushed Mr.Kim's hand away, his heart pounding in his chest. “What are you doing?”
Mr.Kim only shrugged, a cocky smile still playing on his lips. “Just helping you out. You were kind of spiraling there.”
Jimin took a step back, shaking his head. “I think I should go.”
He turned to leave, but before he could take another step, Mr.Kim's voice rang out, stopping him in his tracks.
“I’ll double your salary.”
Jimin froze. The words hit him like a punch to the gut. Double? His mind immediately shifted to the bills he had to pay, the money he sent to his mother every month, the endless financial stress. Without thinking, the word slipped out of his mouth.
“Deal!”
The room fell silent. Even Jimin was shocked by how quickly he had agreed. Mr.Kim raised an eyebrow, clearly amused by the sudden shift in Jimin’s attitude.
Jimin, now realizing what he had just done, felt a sinking feeling in his stomach. What did I just agree to?
I'm in trouble.
