The two brothers sat side by side, the silence between them heavy with emotions yet unspoken. Jungkook glanced over at Jimin, his heart aching at how much he had missed his brother. After all these years, here they were, together again, but there was still so much left to address. So much hurt.
"How are you?" Jungkook asked softly, his voice filled with concern, but it was more than a casual question. He wanted to know how Jimin had survived all this time. How he'd endured being alone.
Jimin stayed quiet for a moment, staring at the ground, before responding with the question that had been tormenting him for years. "Why did you leave me? You promised me you wouldn't."
Jungkook felt a lump in his throat. He had always dreaded this conversation. "Mochi, we never wanted to leave you. We were looking for you—"
"No, you weren’t!" Jimin’s voice cracked, cutting him off. His tears were falling freely now, unable to be contained. He wiped them angrily, his hand trembling. "Every day, I waited for you. For mom. Every day, I thought you’d come and pick me up."
Jungkook’s chest tightened. He wanted to reach out, to hold Jimin, but he felt frozen in place. "We tried, Jimin. Your mom didn’t tell us where she took you. We tried calling her, but we couldn’t reach her. We didn’t know where you were."
Jimin’s jaw clenched, his pain turning into bitterness. "So you just gave up? All of you just left me and moved to the US?" His voice was filled with hurt, and Jungkook could hear the years of abandonment buried beneath his words.
Jungkook was taken aback. How did Jimin know they had moved? "H-how do you know about the US?" he stammered.
Jimin’s eyes filled with a mix of anger and sorrow as the memory came flooding back. "Aunt Yura told me," he said quietly.
Jungkook felt his heart sink. "When?" he asked, afraid of what was coming next.
Jimin’s voice grew even quieter, but the pain in it was louder than ever. "I went back, hyung. I came back home to look for you all. I stood there, in front of the empty house, calling for you. Crying. But no one was there... How could you just leave me?"
Jungkook could barely breathe, the weight of Jimin's words pressing on him like a heavy stone. He could feel his own tears threatening to fall. "Mochi... we were suffering too," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "We couldn’t accept that you were gone. Mom... she cried every single day. She couldn’t function. The house, everything in it, reminded us of you. It was too much. We were broken."
Jimin looked away, biting his lip to hold back another wave of tears. "So you left to forget me, then?" His voice was quiet but filled with the deepest hurt, as if he had been nursing this wound for years.
"No, no, Mochi." Jungkook’s voice was full of desperation now, reaching out to correct Jimin’s misunderstanding. "We didn’t leave to forget you. We left because we didn’t know how to keep going without you. We never, ever forgot you."
Jimin shook his head, letting out a bitter laugh through his tears. "It's okay, hyung. I get it. I’ve been trying to forget you too. I’ve been trying to forget all of you, to move on." His voice trembled with the pain of years spent trying to bury the love he still had for his family.
Jungkook felt like his heart was being ripped apart. Each word Jimin spoke was a dagger of guilt and sorrow. He moved closer, gently placing his hands on Jimin’s face, tilting it up so their eyes could meet. "How are mom and dad?" Jimin asked, his voice breaking. "Are they here? Can I see them? I miss mom. I miss her so much."
Jungkook’s heart broke all over again. He gently wiped the tears from Jimin’s cheeks, his own tears finally spilling over. "They’re not here, Mochi. They’re still in the US... They don’t know I found you yet."
Jimin’s breath hitched. "Why? Why don’t they know? Don’t they miss me?" His voice was raw, the little boy inside him crying out for the family he had lost.
Jungkook rubbed Jimin’s back, trying to soothe him, though he knew words could never heal the wounds his brother carried. "We all miss you. Every single day. Not a moment goes by that we don’t think about you."
Jimin turned, looking up at his brother with eyes filled with years of pain and longing. "I miss you too, hyung. I missed you so much." His voice cracked, and he collapsed into Jungkook’s arms, sobbing against his chest.
Jungkook held him tightly, his own tears flowing freely. He couldn’t find the words to make it right, to fix the years of distance between them. All he could do was hold his brother and pray that somehow, they could heal together.
After what felt like an eternity, Jungkook pulled back slightly, his hands still gripping Jimin’s shoulders. "Let’s go home, Mochi," he said softly, his voice filled with determination. "Let’s go back to our home. Together."
Jimin’s eyes searched Jungkook’s, his heart aching with everything he had been through, but in his brother’s gaze, he saw hope. He nodded slowly, his breath shaky but resolute.
Jungkook smiled, a small, sad smile filled with relief and love. He knew they still had a long way to go, that there were wounds that would take time to heal, but for now, they had each other again. And that was all that mattered.
