“Are you okay?” Cam asked me quickly as we walked up to the gates of the carnival. I sighed and nodded. He knew I hated crowds, but I needed to face them eventually. We walked in, and the smell of corn dogs and slushies hit my nose. I loved slushies, I hated corn dogs. The place was packed full, person upon person filled the grounds. I took a couple deep breaths and began to walk towards the first slushy stand I saw.

“Here, I’ve got it.” Cam got us both a cherry slushy, and we began to walk around the park. I had almost finished it, when I ran into the back of a guy. He was about Cam’s height, so my slushy ran red all over the lower back of his shirt. I gasped, and put a hand over my mouth. Damn you Kenna.

He turned around, and looked at me with wide eyes. I couldn’t make myself speak, as usual, so I stood there like an idiot. His face seemed angry, until his eyes met mine. His face softened, and he gave a small smile.

“It’s okay, just a shirt. Are you alright?” His voice was smooth as butter, and carefully reached out to my crushed slushy. I nodded and Cam appeared at my side, noticing the cup.

“Oh, she’s very sorry, she doesn’t talk much. Can we buy you a new shirt? She’s clumsy, gotta forgive her.” He said quickly, talking for me. I nodded and looked up at the guy in front of me, taking in his features. He had black hair that lightly grazed his eyebrows, and a smile that spread across his face. He was tall and bulky, wearing a black t-shirt and tan khakis. I couldn’t lie, he was very attractive.

“Oh it’s fine, barely noticeable. I just need to clean it off, no trouble. Can you help me real quick?”

His eyes motioned over to a family restroom not very far from us. I nodded, it was the least I could do. Cam squeezed my shoulder, and I followed after him to the bathroom. He opened the door for me politely, and we both slipped inside. I know it sounds bad, but it was the kind with only one room, so we kind of had to both go in.

I carefully grabbed his shirt, and did my best to slip it over his head, which was hard to do because of how tall he was. He laughed, and reached up, finishing the job. His laugh made me smile, at how deep and throaty he was. His shirtless body made me smile as well, before turning away quickly. I grabbed his shirt, and set it on the sink while I wetted down a piece of paper towel.

“Why so jumpy? Never seen such a hot guy before?” He laughed again, and I shot a smile back at him. “Oh, yeah I’m Casen by the way.”

He stuck out a hand, and I shook it with the hand that wasn’t scrubbing his shirt. Luckily, not much of my slushy had been left, so there was not a big spot to clean. Thank goodness he had a black shirt on. I was still surprised that he had not been mad.

Any reasonable person would have been very upset. I finished scrubbing, and it was unknown as to what even happened. I handed it back to him, and ran a hand through my hair. He slipped it on, giving a slight shiver as the wet shirt hit his back.

“Thank you. It was my fault anyway, I was just walking around taking it all in, I didn’t even think about looking behind me. See, I’m not from here. I live in Kansas City, which is a long way from here. I just moved there from Iowa, and I kind of wanted to have some fun before the school year. I’m here for the summer.” He smiled a broad smile, and I shook my head in disbelief.

“Me too.” I whispered, how weird that we both lived in the same city, and met like this?

“Really? That’s crazy! Do you happen to go to Mason Catholic? Ha, fat chance right!” Casen’s smile was mesmerizing. No fucking way. I went to Mason Catholic. I nodded quickly, and gave a small laugh. How weird!

“No shit? That’s crazy! I’m going to be a senior. I bet you’ll be a junior?” He asked excitedly. I nodded. This was insane. “Man! That’s so cool! Now, I’m looking forward to it!” I smiled and opened the door, to find Cam standing outside of the small building. My protecter.

“Hey man, oh are you guys here together. Oh, I’m sorry. Thanks for helping me clean up.” He gave a nod to Cam and began walking away. “No, I mean yes we came together. But we’re just friends. Best friends.” Cam smiled and shot a threatening look to Casen, and his eyes got big.

“Oh, alright. Well um, do you guys want to hang out together? I don’t exactly know anyone here and you guys seem cool.” Casen looked around, looking somewhat lost. “

Yeah sure. I’m Cameron, this is Mykenna. Yes she’s single, and if you try anything with her, I will throw you over the pier.” Casen’s eyes got even wider, and his face flashed a deep red.

“No, I mean- no I wouldn’t try anything. I, uh-” He stuttered, scratching his head nervously.

“Oh, I saw the way you first looked at her. I know she’s pretty, just don’t get ballsy.” Cam remarked in a even tone, and I slapped his arm. Stop, I warned him. He shrugged and laughed. Casen seemed to relax after the laugh, but he definitely got that message.

I smiled at him, and pointed to the giant ferris wheel. He nodded, and we raced to it, Cam not far behind. We reached it, and I looked behind me to see him talking to a girl with black hair to her butt. She was pretty, but not his usual type. I smiled at them, hoping they would hit it off. He hadn’t had a girlfriend since dating me, and it made me feel like I somehow set him back. He grabbed her hand, and brought her up to Casen and I.

“Um, this is Candice. Is it cool if she rides with us?” He asked with hopeful eyes. He liked her already, I could tell. I nodded, and so did Casen.

“Great! This is Mykenna, and Casen.” We all shook hands and it was our time to get on the ride. I gladly got on next to Casen, and he carefully put his arm around my shoulders. I didn’t mind, and I scooted over closer to him. He happily put his arm around me tighter, and I smiled as the giant ride rose up into the sky.

The view to my right was pretty good, and the view to my left was spectacular. The lights of the city sparkled, and I felt like I was shining too. I closed my eyes, and let it all sink it. Soon enough, we were back on the ground, and we were getting off. I didn’t realize how late it was. I motioned towards Cam’s watch, and he nodded.

“Well I think I’m done for the day. It’s been a great one.” He said, “Candice, can I um, get your number maybe?” He asked her quietly, no doubt trying to fake his confidence. I smiled and turned to give Casen a goodbye. He smiled down at me, and I brought him into a hug.

Today had been amazing with him, I needed this badly. “I had a marvelous day with you, Mykenna. I sure hope we can see each other again before school time. I’ll miss your beautiful face.” He didn’t even blush, he just kept his eyes locked on mine. I nodded and motioned towards his pocket, and he slipped out his phone.

I grabbed it smoothly from his hand, and put my number into it. This guy was sure sweet, and I would get his number eventually if I had school with him. I might as well. I smiled and handed it back to him.

“Oh thanks, have a great night. See you whenever.” I gave him a final hug, and walked towards Cam who was already leaving.

“Damn. What a good day! I told you that you’d have fun. You liked him didn’t ya? I could tell. He was looking at you big time, I swear!” He gushed, and I lightly bit my lip. It was cute how Cam talked, how excited he got when he talked about love. I shrugged, and we kept walking. We caught a taxi, and we were soon back in the apartment. I smiled as I felt a buzz in my back pocket.

It was Casen already, he was such a cutie. I sent back a message, before climbing into bed. I couldn’t fall asleep though, because today’s events kept running through my head. It was a cheesy love story, a carnival, a ferris wheel ride. Usually, I would have thought it was silly, gross even. But I found it cute, and how crazy that he happened to be where I was from? It was like fate. No, really. I think it was fate. Because of him, I was now happy. There was small sense of purpose in my life. It always amazed me how things play out. The world was weird.
