I saw a flash of light in the distance. Matthew carefully lifted his head from my shoulder as a car pulled into the parking lot briskly. It was too hard to see in the dark of the night, but I heard the door shut quickly, followed by footsteps. He ran under a lamp post near the outside corner of the parking lot, and his face was drained. It was Casen. He quickly neared Matthew and I on the curb, where he stopped in his tracks. His face became even paler as his eyes drifted between us. They widened as he landed on me, and he swallowed deeply. He walked over, before opening his mouth.
"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for any of this to happen. It's all my fault. I'm so sorry, Mykenna. Really. I can't express how sorry I am. I understand you probably could care less about me. I know I was an asshole to you. I know I caused this mess. And I know I can't tell you anything to make the situation better. But I'm here to try."
Casen's voice was deeper than I had ever heard, and his hands were shaking violently. I walked to him slowly, drawing in the look in his eyes. I narrowed my eyes into him, trying to produce the anger I had felt towards him earlier. But I couldn't. I couldn't find it in myself to be mad at anyone but myself right now. I grabbed his hand gently and squeezed it, trying to depress it's shaking.
"Let's go inside. Hi, I'm Matthew. I'm guessing you must be Casen." Matthew reached out a hand hesitantly, and grasped Casen's other one. They locked eyes, a sort of mutual agreement not to ask any further questions. I turned and headed for the door, eager to get out of the cold in my thin sweatshirt and leggings. It didn't take long to find the waiting room where Nash, Elizabeth, Cameron, and Jack Gilinsky were waiting. I guess Jack must have came in from a different door. Jack Johnson rounded the corner from the bathrooms, his eyes widening at the mass of people waiting. Suddenly Cameron stood up, removing himself from the group.
"So. You must be Casen. I hope you know you're the reason why Shawn is in here, you're an inconsiderate piece of-" Cameron said as he lunged at Casen, tackling him to the ground. Cameron met Casen's face with a punch square into the nose, and immediately they were rolling around. I screamed, and jumped on Casen's back. Matthew was trying to pry Cameron off of him, despite being quite smaller. He was yelling at him, begging him to stop doing this. Matthew used all the strength in him to pull Cameron off, just enough that I was able to get in the middle of them. I put one hand on each of their chests, desperately trying to get them to stop.
"It's not his fault! He didn't know! Stop, Cam! Calm down, Jack take him to calm down." Matthew's voice dropped with every word, soothing him with his voice. Jack Gilinsky quickly grabbed his arm and dragged him gently down the hallway towards the exit. I pushed Casen down the opposite hallway, until we found another waiting room. He was breathing very heavy, his hands clenched tightly with his jaw.
The waiting room was darker, with no one in sight. I pushed him into a chair gently, thinking he wouldn't decide to run after Cameron. I was wrong, and he nearly bolted before I sat on his lap, smashing his private parts just enough for him to get the message. I stood up and sat on the floor in front of him, resting my head in my hands.
"Who was that? Another one of your boyfriends?" His hand was drawn to his nose, where blood was trickling out of. I shook my head at him. "As if I needed a reminder that I've screwed up. Terrific. I have enough on my mind." He said. I sighed from disbelief and took to my feet. I wasn't going to sit here any longer and listen to him feel bad about himself. Shawn was lying in a bed somewhere, nearly brain dead, and he had the nerve to say he had a lot on his mind? I walked back to the rest of the group, and was happy to know that he wasn't following me. As I reached them, a nurse was talking to Matthew, asking him something. Matthew reached his arm out for me and I ran to him.
"This is Shawn's girlfriend, Mykenna. I'm Matthew." He shook her hand, a young woman with cropped black hair. Light freckles speckled her face, her eyes speckled with color. Her smile was short but polite, and she held out a hand to me. I shook it quickly, eager to hear what else she had to say.
"Nice to meet you both. I'm Courtney. Dr. Lloyd says you may go see Shawn now if you'd like. His condition is still the same, so it may be vital you see him soon. Two or three people only, however." Her smile was apologetic, as she was trying to be as hopeful as possible with the cold facts. I nodded, and felt new tears forming in the crease of my eyes as I nodded again. I had to see him soon or I felt my head might burst into a million pieces.
"I'd like to come, if that's okay with you." Matthew asked quietly, feeling the need to have approval. "And Nash." Nash perked his head up from his seat, his eyes drooping. He walked to us, rubbing his eyes, ridding them of sleep.
"Alright, please follow me." Courtney led us down a long corridor, with rooms lining each side. I heard the beeping of machines, the rustling of sheets, and various whispers of family members among each room. However, she stopped outside of a room completely silent. It was eerily quiet compared to the rest of the hospital, and it scared me.
A machine let out a small whine as we entered the room. I nearly collapsed at the sight of him. He was lying in bed, his body stretched out. His neck was held in place by a collar. He had nothing but a hospital gown from his waist down. His stomach was wrapped in tape and cloth, like I had seen on movies when people break ribs or something like that. My hand drifted to my mouth as I gasped, taking in the view of him. His face was still scratched up a little, but he wasn't covered in blood anymore. There was a bulge under neath the blankets near the bottom, and I saw his left leg was in a splint.
The worst sight was the oxygen mask covering most of his face, along with numerous tubes lining his arms and chest. He looked so vulnerable there, and I knew he was. It suddenly hit me, how bad this was. How serious it was. Shawn might not make it. This might be the end of the greatest person I had ever met, right here.
I think what scares me the most is that this might be one of the last times I see him. But he was my Shawn. The guy I met at MAGCON. The guy who carried me down the stairs at the hotel. The guy who showed so much compassion for me when I was trampled by his fans. The guy who wasn't afraid of showing his feelings for me, even when he had competition. The guy who made out with me in a bathroom stall at MAGCON. The guy who broke my heart completely, and drove me to madness. The guy who won my heart back quicker than he should have. The guy who had turned my life around for the better. The guy who I loved with all I had. The guy who was laying in this bed right now, practically begging God to stay alive.
The guy who was in this mess because he loved me too much.
