JESSICA
Victor's popularity made me think that he could be the one I had been searching for. I had never met him but the way Smith painted him as some invincible dark Lord made me wonder whether he was my greatest enemy and if that was so, would I be strong enough to take him on?
He could be the one that had killed my parents and as much as I wished to have Marcus shielding me against him, I realized that if I really wanted to get to the root of their murder, I would have to do it without him. I could not continue depending on him especially now that I knew about what this Victor did to Liam, it was clear Marcus would not give away his son's life to save mine.
Whatever it was that they believed I ridiculously owed them, I may be a coward but I was mostly certain that I would not give it to them. They had taken my life away from me so if they thought they would get anything from me, they needed some strong meds.
There was only one way I could get out of this house without anyone noticing what I had truly planned.
I ran down the stairs, connecting my earphones to the phone. My heart that had shifted to my back finally returned to its rightful position when I found no one in the living room, good.
That was until someone wrapped their long warm fingers around my wrist as I reached for the door making me turn to face them.
"Can we talk?"
Marcus said, his voice slightly different.
"Uhm, can this wait? I just want to go jogging before it gets dark."
I didn't think it would be wise to have any serious conversation with him right now because he would see right through me.
"I won't be long, come on"
He led the way to his study and I reluctantly followed.
"Close the door behind you please?"
He said as soon as I had entered and I did as told.
"Sit"
He gestured towards the chair right in front of me as he sat on his high quality leather one on the opposite side of his cherrywood desk.
I sat, letting my eyes absorb every detail since it was my first and probably my last time in his study.
The décor was neat and colourful but the dark walls gave it an edge that if absent, this study wouldn't be Marcus'. It was spacious just like all the other rooms in this house. Every room, including the bathrooms were at least two times my mother's kitchen.
Beside the wall stood a tall bookstore with each of its shelves packed with gigantic books and I wondered whether he'd read all of them. I could just imagine myself here reading a book and feeling the warmth provided by the sunlight through the large window behind him. I loved it.
"Do you need anything to drink?"
Marcus was being super polite today and I wondered whether i should start to worry.
"No, I'm fine"
He nodded slowly, his eyes searching my face suspiciously.
"I know you heard my conversation with Christian"
This wasn't a question but I felt like it needed some kind of response but right now, the cat seemed to have literally caught my tongue.
"I don't know how you're able to block out your thoughts from me but I'm guessing you were planning to run away"
He hadn't entered my mind but how was it possible that he knew so much?
I looked down. Letting my eyes meet his would probably be shooting myself right on the foot.
