We quickly walked in the direction of our location, my heart beating faster and faster. Was this it? Was this my final destination or was this just one of the stops?
The forest opened into a clearing. A mountain was on the edge of the grassy field and there the looming palace lying right on top of it.
"Why does this castle feel familiar?" Clove decided to butt her voice in. I was still upset at her but I needed any ounce of information I could get.
"It doesn't feel familiar to me. You must be thinking of things."
"I'm serious, Mallory. Something is off about this. I smell trouble."
"You are trouble."
Growling, she responded, "Look, I think you should reconsider this. Go back. I don't like the feel of this place."
"You done, Little Goddess?"
The voice snapped me out of my thoughts and I smiled. "Huh? Oh, with my wolf? Yeah. Sorry." I turned my face away to shut her up. "Go away Clove. We're doing this thing. It took me so long to get here."
I started to grip the cracks and crevices of the mountain, feeling my way so my fingers could grab on to something. My legs started to pull their way up and I started to breathe heavily. This was way too much work! Dion started to chuckle, making me turn and glare down at him. My mouth dropped open when I realized I wasn't even a foot off the ground.
He crossed his arms and looked up at me, smirking. "Need a hand?"
Blowing a piece of hair off my eyes, I snorted. "No way. I totally got this. This is a piece of cake. I've gone to the rock-climbing place thousands of times with Jennalyn. We climbed the full 10 feet when we were kids."
Dion shook his head and placed his hands on my waist, making me gasp. He lowered me down, gently. "Babe, does this look like ten feet to you?" My eyes followed where he was motioned and my jaw dropped. Technically, I didn't see it from down here so close to it. Now that I was near it, it was huge.
"Look, I brought a rope. But I don't think we should climb from here. If this place has any guards or alarms, we should do it from the side, not the front of the mansion. I'm not saying they won't invite you in, but just in case." He explained, tying one end of the itchy cord around me.
I nodded, understanding what he meant. We started to climb, me occasionally slipping on the loose gravel of the mountain. Was this what I was waiting for? Who would be there? My mother? She would only come down if it was important. The last thing she came down for was the Dark War, to tell me who I was. Now, this was getting weird. My trust in the ble flóges was dwindling.
Why hadn't I thought this through before? Stupid Mallory. Now everything is coming at you when you're only a couple of meters away from the mansion that literally blue flames were leading you towards and you went on a trip with a random blue-haired pervert flirtatious handsome guy to figure out your meaning. Yep, sounds about every book I've read. Now, this would be a new one; but way better.
Dion reached the top first, his muscles bulging when he pulled himself over the edge. He turned and reached out, grabbing my little hand in his large one. I pulled my leg over and my fingernails dug into the dirt for support.
"Oh, mother of all goddesses...that was way too much work." I huffed, breathing heavily and looking up at the clear blue sky.
"Dang, you are way heavier than you look," Dion said, resting his elbows on top of his knees, groaning.
I glared at him from the sides of my eyes and threw a clump of dirt at him. "You are so lucky I'm tired. I'll claw your eyes out."
He smirked. "That's too bad. At least my ears can still hear your lovely voice."'
My cheeks heated up but I shook it off. "Let's go." We returned to our normal selves and put our backs to the side of the mansion wall. I leaned quietly over to see if there were any guards or anything magical at all at the front.
I turned to look back at Dion. "All clear."
His eyebrows shot up. "Then that's clearly abnormal." I silently agreed as we walked to the front door. I put my ear up to it, wondering if there were any sounds I could catch.
"Do you think anyone is in there?" I asked.
"Only one way to find out," Dion said.
