Damon's P.O.V.
A pale, sickly looking woman stood on our doorstep,
"Can I help you?", I asked.
"I-I um- I'm looking-"
"It's for me.", Zuri said, pushing past me and closing the door. I quickly opened it again,
"You don't get to block me out of conversations in my own house."
"Damon just leave us the fuck alone!"
SMACK!
"Don't talk to me that way."
"They hit you?", the woman asked.
"No, mama it's not like that-"
"I don't want you getting beat. Let's go.", she cut Zuri off, grabbing her hand. I grabbed her other hand,
"Ma'am, you can't take her. My husband and I have custody of her right now and if you want her back you need to take it up with the court." Zuri flinched at the comment.
"She's my kid."
"And there's a reason you don't have custody of her. Why don't we all just calm down? We can sit and talk about this. Come in for some coffee." She hesitated but nodded as I went in first. Ellie stood on the stairs looking scared. "Hey, will you get the others and go to Luke's for a bit baby?" She nodded,
"Sure D." I led Zuri and her mom to the kitchen, getting a cup of coffee,
"I'm Damon, by the way.", I said handing it to the drug addict in my kitchen.
"Margi.", she said softly. I gestured to the table as Ash came in,
"Who-"
"Zuri's mom stopped by.", I cut him off. He nodded as we all sat at the table.
"So, what's going on?", Zuri asked her mom.
"I-I left Craig. I left him for you baby. We-We can go to Arizona. Together. I-I-I just need a little money. Y'know, for-for bus tickets." Ash and I glanced at each other as I tried to come up with a polite way to say we weren't giving her money for meth. Margi glanced at us as I opened my mouth, only for Zuri to beat me to it,
"It's not their job to give you money mom.", she said softly, "It's not my job either. Get clean. Get a job. I won't even consider going with you until those two things happen. Call your sponsor for God's sake. It's her job to help you." She paused, "I-I think you should go."
"O-Okay.", Margi muttered, getting up. We walked her to the door as Luke and Lily ran in from Luke's.
"Mama?", Luke whispered. Zuri froze before her eyes fell to the floor.
"Luke.", Margi whispered, "Lily. Oh my babies!" She went to hug them but they both ran behind me. She looked hurt for a second before she went to leave, turning back to Zuri, "I'm worried about you living with a couple of fags." Zuri flinched at the word,
"We don't use that word in this house. Bye mom.", she said, closing and locking the door in her face. I crouched to the twins,
"Go back to Luke's while we talk to Zuri." They ran off as she looked away from us,
"I'm sorry. I-I didn't think she'd come here."
"It's okay. It's not your fault baby.", I said softly, "Did-Did you know?" She nodded a little,
"I-I thought you'd separate us if I told you the truth."
"Of course not. You're not in trouble baby. You can stop being so nervous.", Ash said.
"She-She just wanted money. She's using again."
"I'm sorry baby. I wish she'd get better for you.", I said softly.
"Yeah. But she won't. I'm not her priority." I tilted her head up,
"Hey, you're our priority."
"I know." She stepped forward and hugged me as I held her tightly.
"Sweetie, we talked about it and-and if you want us to, we'd be happy to adopt you." She stepped back, looking up at me,
"I-I've only been here for three months." I shrugged,
"You're easily part of our family. We'd love to make it official." She nodded, hugging me and Ash,
"Thank you. I-I wanna stay. Really bad."
"So that's a yes?" She nodded quickly,
"Y-Yeah."
~~~~
"You're sure it's okay?", I asked Ellie as I sat on her bed.
"Yes dad. It's fine. Really." I sighed,
"Okay."
"What happened with her mom?"
"She's using again and asked for money. Zuri was the one who told her to leave." I paused, "When she was walking out, she called us fags. Zuri stood up for us just like you guys do. That's how I knew she needed to stay." She nodded,
"Yeah."
"But you are still my babygirl. If you ever feel like we're ignoring or neglecting you, tell me."
"Trust me, I will."
"Good. I love you baby."
"I love you too D."
~~~~
I heard something big being moved upstairs as I got up from the couch. As I got to the top if the stairs, Ellie was trying to push her bed out of her room. I sighed, pulling the other end as she looked up,
"Thanks." I nodded as we got it out to the hall,
"What are you doing?"
"Mittens took a mouse in my room and now it's somewhere and I don't know where."
"Want some help?" She jumped in front of me,
"No! I-I got it." I looked around her into her absolutely destroyed room as she sank down, "I'm sorry."
"It's okay baby. I'm not upset. But can I help?" She sighed,
"Yeah. Thanks D."
~~~~
"So... is Kaden gay?", Zuri asked me.
"I... don't think so. I think he just enjoys doing makeup honestly."
"Oh. Cool." Ellie came downstairs, grabbing the sandwich I'd made off the plate,
"Can I sleep in your room?" I took the sandwich back, cutting it in half and giving half to her,
"Of course. Can I ask why?"
"I never found the mouse. I give up for the night. But I'm not sleeping in there with the freaking mouse." I chuckled,
"Okay baby. I'll help you find it tokorrow. Okay?"
"Okay. Thanks D."
