Breakable

Damon's P.O.V.

My whole body froze as my heart broke,

"You're-", I stopped, taking deep breaths, "O-Okay."

"Okay?", he whispered.

"I need to think." I got up and went back to the bedroom, only for Asher to follow,

"Damon, please let me explain."

"What is there to explain?", I tried to channel my anger but it came out as sadness when my voice cracked, "I'm-I'm not enough for you! I get it."

"You are. You are Damon. I promise-"

"Then why!?"

"I didn't have a choice!" I shook my head,

"You need to leave. I-I can't have this conversation right now." He stopped, nodding a little,

"O-Okay."

Asher's P.O.V.

"I-I can't.", I whispered into the phone.

"Ash? What's wrong? Are you okay?"

"N-No.", I choked out, "I can't keep doing this Al."

"Doing what? Where are you?"

"The bridge."

"What!? Asher stay there. I'm coming to get you."

"I hate myself. I'm so fucking stupid. I don't deserve to live."

"Ash, just stay put. Please. I'm on my way. Just promise me you'll stay where you are."

"I can't." I hung up, getting out of my car and walking towards the bridge. I stood at the edge, going to climb up on the railing but I was shaking too much to even get there. I sat on the ground in a ball, sobbing. Why? Why would I throw away the best thing I ever had? Being scared wasn't an excuse. I should have just told him. He would have understood. He would have kept me safe. I was just so scared.

"Ash.", I heard Alex whisper, "Thank god. Come on kid." He pulled me up to my feet, wrapping me in a hug tightly, "It's okay. I've got you kiddo. C'mon, let's get you someplace safe."

I woke up on Alex's couch, him sitting at my feet,

"Al?"

"Hey. How're you feeling?", he asked softly as I sat up. He pushed my hair from my face gently, "You really scared me."

"I'm sorry. I-I just wanted to tell you goodbye."

"You don't get to die before me kid.", he laughed a little, "I-I really thought I lost you. You know I can't lose you Ash."

"I-I know. I'm so sorry.", I choked out. He hugged me tightly,

"Shh, it's okay. You're safe now, that's all that matters." He held me tightly until I'd mostly calmed down. "What happened?"

"I-I-I should have told you. I'm so sorry I didn't tell you."

"Ash, calm down. Tell me now kid."

"I-I've been cheating on Damon."

"Why?"

"Justin.", I whispered.

"What? What'd you mean? How long has this been going on?"

"A few months. He came back and-and he told me he'd hurt the kids. I couldn't let that happen so I did what he said. I-I just didn't wanna get beat again Al. Damon asked about the bruises a few times and I lied and said I fell or some shit. Rowan saw Justin kiss me yesterday in the mall. I-I told Damon at dinner and he told me to leave."

"You need to tell him the truth. I-I'm not gonna promise anything, but I think he'll understand. He loves you so much Ash. I can't imagine him letting you go so easily. It'll take time and a lot of work to rebuild the trust and fix this, but it'll happen. Okay?" I nodded,

"O-Okay."

"C'mon, you need to eat something."

"I'm not hungry."

"I wasn't asking."

A few days later, I was helping Alex clean up the kitchen when someone knocked on the front door.

"Will you get it?", he asked. I nodded, walking out to the front door, turning the jazz music down as I passed the stereo. I opened the front door and froze,

"H-Hey.", I whispered, looking at my feet. I've never wanted to die more.

"Hi.", Damon said softly, "We-We gotta talk."

I told him the truth. Reluctantly, of course.

"So, you cheated on me to avoid getting beat again and risking the family?", Damon clarified. I nodded,

"Y-Yeah." He paused,

"I-I understand why. I wish you would have just told me."

"I know. I do too. I was scared."

"I know." He hesitated, "I still love you. You're the love of my life Ash. I can't see myself with anyone else. I can't imagine marrying anyone else. Or having kids with anyone else. I can't imagine living the rest of my life without you."

"I can't either. But I-I understand if you don't want to be with me. I know I really hurt you. I'm so sorry."

"I-I forgive you. Knowing why really helped. And having time to think. Will-Will you come home?" I hesitated,

"I-I think I need to be here for another day or two. I think it's really helping me having Alex around like when i was younger and I think it's helping him to take care of me." He nodded,

"Okay. Come home when you're ready."

"Thanks Dame." He hugged me tightly,

"I love you so so much."

"I love you more."

I glanced at Alex, who had been silently asking for the past twenty minutes.

"We'll be okay. Thanks. For-For calling him and taking care of me."

"Just because you're an adult doesn't mean you're not still my responsibility."

"I like being your responsibility."

"Good." He smiled softly, "I'm really glad you have your own life Ash. And I'm so proud of you. I love seeing you happy and with your own family and everything. But I do wish you'd come home more often." I nodded,

"I know. I'm gonna start coming back at least once a week. I can tell you stuff I can't tell Damon and I never realize how much I'm bottling up until I see you."

"Wednesdays."

"Wednesdays?"

"You come home for the night. I don't care if you bring Damon or the kids or both. I just want you home for a night a week." I nodded,

"Okay. Wednesdays."
