I was trapped, stuck. Not moving but I was trying to.
Flashes of people I used to know floating in and out, like a fever dream. But I wasn't sick.
My father shrinking from the Hulk and back again. Danny jumping off a balcony while I screamed, my mother heaped on the floor of her bedroom. The coffin of my birth father dropping into the bottom of the hole in the ground.
Then the ground started shaking. It was an earthquake. But nothing was falling.
I heard Bucky's voice screaming my name.
My eyes jerked open. It wasn't Bucky. It was Steve and Vision, standing by the side of my bed.
"Li Anne!"
The faint noise of my radio played in the background. There was stuff everywhere even though I went to bed in a tidy room.
I was sweaty but freezing.
My chest heaving, l looked from Steve to Vision and then back. "What happened?"
Vision turned on the lights.
"You were moving things in your sleep. Your cloud was coming out of the radio. It wasn't your music," Steve tried to explain.
What?
I didn't have time to speak. The cloud came out of the radio again, blaring along with the upbeat pop song. All over my room, stuff was flying through the air, landing and running into things.
My arms were streaked with purple. The back of my head burned. I knew what was wrong.
"Turn off the radio!" I screeched.
Both men jumped. Steve dove for it, turning the power knob all the way down. The flying objects all fell. A sweater landed on my head and a book hit Vision's shoulder.
"What's going on?" Steve asked.
"I'm evolving."
Avengers Compound was empty except for me, Steve, and Vision. The other Avengers were on a mission.
I hadn't been feeling good so I stayed behind. Steve had a pulled hamstring and Vision didn't like going on missions.
My powers were evolving. This had happened before. When I first got my powers and when I moved to Calcutta.
Because the stone in my head is an infinite being, it has to adapt to its surroundings. I was still growing and developing so the stone has to "grow up" with me.
As far as I could see, I could now use existing music to control my powers instead of generating it myself.
Upside:
It saved a lot of energy.
Downside:
I might have to relearn how to use my powers.
I explained all these things to Steve and Vision as best as I could. Vision seemed to grasp it a little better because he too housed an Infinity Stone.
It was decided that we should call in Tony from his new house in LA. Every music player in the Compound was shut off and I didn't use my powers at all.
Vision suddenly said that I was running a fever and when he checked, he was correct. 102.6. Steve carried me back to bed to wait for Tony.
I ate some rice and applesauce, writing a letter to Bucky when Tony ran in, a Starbucks cup and a bouquet of flowers. He gave both to me.
