"What does it say?" Wanda asked, her voice slightly distorted due to the bad connection in our bathroom.
I twisted the wand in my hand, examining every centimeter of it. Although this was becoming a daily practice, my heart still jumped while I waited for the line or lines to show up. Bucky and I had reached the one month anniversary of our marriage and we were quickly hurtling towards stage two of being a married couple.
"Li Anne, I'm dying, tell me!" She whined. "Are you pregnant or not?"
"I don't-" I froze, staring at those two lines that had etched themselves in my future. "Holy Brahma." The white wand clattered on the bathroom floor, skittering under the vanity.
Wanda let out a groan. "Li Anne Michelle Barnes, what is going on?"
"I'm pregnant."
My voice was barely a whisper. With one hand, I blindly reached for another box under the sink.
"Are you sure?"
"There are two lines. I'm going to take another."
Ripping open the package, I pulled out a second wand and muted my phone's microphone.
Wanda was rambling out how amazing this was but all I could think of was what Bucky would say. When we agreed that the possibility of having children was something we were open to, I don't think either of us imagined that I would get pregnant two weeks later.
"Wanda, what if it's positive and I actually am pregnant? What will we do?" I stared at the place where the lines would form.
She laughed. "You are Lady Lavender. An Avenger. You will fight until you're forced to stop."
"Wan, I don't even know if I am an Avenger anymore. I have a new life now."
"Annie, you have to remember your past and honor it, even if you don't want any part in it. Like Pietro. He would want me to remember everything that was done to us but learn from it and use it."
I didn't respond because the pregnancy test caught my eye. "It's positive."
Wanda exploded. "I'm so happy for you!"
I sighed. "Thanks. I guess I gotta tell Bucky."
"Well, seeing as how he's the father, I would hope so. I've got to buy some more cocoa."
"Love you, Wanda."
She kissed her phone. "Love you too, Li Anne."
As soon as the call was disconnected, I sank down to the bathroom floor. It was Christmas Eve. How was I supposed to tell him? I had to do it tonight. There was absolutely no way I could keep it from him over night.
Suddenly, I needed to fight something. Or destroy something. My cloud swirled around me, dressing me in a white tank top and purple workout shorts with my favorite pair of tennis shoes. Pulling my hair into a high ponytail, I stared at myself in the mirror.
Could I really be a mother? GiGi kept telling me how scared she was about having her baby in April but what about me?
I wrote Bucky a note, telling him I went to the farm and would be back by dinner. I wasn't hungry for lunch so all I brought as a light weight hoodie and a couple of random household objects.
The farm was small, settled in a clearing surround by trees. Blazing sun light shone down on me almost harshly as I stepped out of the portal. Setting down the cardboard box full of old glass bottles, my earpiece with Evelyn in it, a handgun, and my cuff bracelet, I could feel my skin moistening with sweat.
My cloud spread the bottles out in a wide circle in a 50 foot circumference and I loaded the gun. One by one, I shot them from their positions in the grass. They exploded with a satisfying crash and I moved on to the next one.
When all fifty were destroyed, my cloud hovered over the Time Stone and I restored every bottle to its original position. Sweat poured down my back and face but I just kept going, shooting out all of my fear, doubts, and annoyance.
"Doll!" My husband's voice called me over the hill.
I lowered the gun, switching on the safety before dropping it on the ground.
Bucky started jogging towards me, his hair bouncing around his shoulders. "Doll, are you ok?"
I nodded, suddenly tired, and leaned my head on his chest when he was close enough. "I'm pregnant." As soon as I heard myself blurt it out, I wanted to retract the words. My hand even brushed the Time Stone in an attempt to try but I stopped when I heard his reply.
"For real? Like this is actually happening?" He asked, looking down at me.
I whispered into his shirt. "Yeah."
"Doll, do you know what we did?"
"What?"
He began to laugh. "We beat the odds! We're having kid!"
Every doubt released out of my mind and I relaxed against him. "We did."
He kissed me with a deep passion that I returned. Bucky's arm reached around my waist, his fingers fiddling with the bare skin under my top's hem. My hands were buried in his hair, my nose brushing his.
"I love you."
"I love you too," I whispered, opening a portal and pushing us into it.
We were back home, my box of stress relief back on the counter.
"Merry Christmas, doll."
Later, splayed out in bed, I had a thought. "Bucky?"
He was rubbing my thigh and turned to look at me. "Hmm?"
"Who do we tell?"
"I feel like we should tell your sister and Steve first. And then maybe in January we can tell other people."
I pressed a kiss on his shoulder. "Good plan. Are we ready for when Steve comes next week?"
"I think so. How long before we have to convert the guest room into a nursery?"
I gulped. "I have no idea. We are so not prepared."
"Hey, we'll be ok, Li Anne. We will make it."
"Ok," I whispered, snuggling on top of his bare chest. "Now that that's taken care of, me and the baby wanna sleep."
Bucky slid his hand up to brush my stomach. "Have a good nap, sweetheart. You too, little wonder."
I smiled. "Wonder. I like that."
"Dinner will be ready when you wake up," Bucky said as I closed my eyes.
"No," I whined. "Stay with me."
He chuckled and wrapped his arm around my back. "Alright. Only because I love you."
