The hallway was quiet.

"Steve, I'm in."

"We see you. Head left."

My boots making light clicking noises, I made the left turn.

"Evelyn, keep watch."

"Of course, miss. There is a guard break room at the other end of the hallway."

"Did you hear that, Steve?"

"Loud and clear. We'll take care of them. Get the book. And another left."

Both the ceiling and the floor were white. I stood out like a wine stain on a white shirt. My pace quicken with my pulse. Pursing my lips, I ducked down the next hallway.

There it was. The vault containing my future.

"I'm here. Password?"

Sam's voice came on my comm. "3-5-7-3-2-8-5-3-5-5-0-1."

I gently tapped each number with my gloved hand, muttering the digits to myself to remember.

The door unlocked and I yanked it open, leaving it slightly cracked and then paused.

Inside the vault was overflowing with Hydra paraphernalia.

"Wow."

There was a box near me with a report made by Sharon Carter. I reached for the report. It was a box of the Volume Button declared as a dangerous Hydra weapon.

"Is that-" Steve started.

I put down the paper. "I wanna destroy it so badly but it'll give us away.
"Smart girl."

"Miss Banner, I've located the book," Evelyn said.

"Map," I pulled up a 3D model of the room. The book was flashing red and I followed the map towards the book.

Carelessly tossed on top of a pile of files, the paper menace sat innocently staring at me.

"Li Anne, you've got incoming." Natasha's voice was quick.

My cloud pulled the door shut. My pulse jumped in my throat. "How long do I have?"

"Forty seconds."

I snatched the book up, tucked it under my arm, and formed a portal with my right hand, right as I heard the code button beeping. Leaping through and closing it as fast as I could, I gave a sigh of relief as I looked around my old bedroom. It was only eleven at night but I was exhausted from adrenaline.

"Guys, we did it."

Nat whooped, Steve cheered in the background, and I could hear clap. I stuffed the book into the hole in my mattress and flopped down on my old bed.

So much of my life had happened here.

Before I left, I grabbed a stack of journals out of my closet.

In a sweet, low voice, I sang my way out.

"Let the bough break, let it come down crashing;

Tony was snoring down the hallway. I passed his room.

"Let the sun fade out to a dark sky;

His door was cracked open and I could see him and Pepper splayed out under the covers.

"I can't say I'd even notice it was absent;"

They had recently gotten back together after some "break".

"'Cause I could live by the light in your eyes;"

Pepper gently stirred but I kept singing.

"I'll unfold before you;"

Even though I didn't say it, I thought it. "Thank you."

"Would have strung together;"

I portaled my way back to the hotel in DC, the last words staying on my lips like the sweet aftertaste of honey.

"The very first words of a lifelong love letter."
