I got up and ran. Danny followed behind me as fast as he could.
The power of the gauntlet's raw energy had left his entire right side fatally injured. He stumbled for a bit before his body collapsed besides a pile of debris. I skidded to a stop next to him, dropping to my knees next to him.
Rhodey flew in as fast as he could, his helmet retracting to show his devastated face in and went up to Tony to see his long time colleague and friend fading away. He bowed his head, knowing the damage was done.
Tears beaded in my eyes and I just looked at him. "No," I breathed.
Peter dove towards us, kneeling right next to him.
Tony slowly moved his eyes to meet Peter's.
"Mr. Stark?" Peter was crying and I put an arm around his shoulder. "Hey– Mr. Stark? Can you hear me? It's Peter. Hey. We won, Mr. Stark– We won, Mr. Stark. We won. You did it, sir. You did it."
Tony couldn't speak but I could feel his pride for Peter and the rest of us.
Peter broke down and hugged him. "I'm sorry– Tony-"
I could speak now and I moved so Tony could see me. "Hey, Tony," my entire chest contracted. "Thank you. For everything." Tears slid down my cheeks. "I promise, she won't be anything she doesn't want to be."
He opened his mouth to breathe and I knew his time was ending fast. Pepper hadn't landed yet so I kept talking to keep him awake.
"I'll take care of them. Both of them. And Peter. I promise. Thank you for forgiving Bucky. And taking care of me and Danny. People don't just see your money. Not after what you've done for them."
I heard Pepper land behind me and I tried to move but I was rooted to the spot. Peter came up and helped me step away while Pepper talked to him.
Danny had run to find his dad and was standing between him and Steve. Peter couldn't stop crying and I held him close while he sobbed over my shoulder.
I turned around just in time to see Tony's arc reactor flicker off for good.
Tony Stark, Iron Man, Earth's Best Defender, was dead.
Tears glided my face, mixing with the grime so brown water droplets rolled down the back of Peter's suit.
I unwrapped his arms from my waist and put one around my shoulder so I was his crutch. My one arm circled his waist and we made our way up to where Pepper was weeping on Tony's body.
I put on arm on Pepper's shoulder and leaned down to kiss Tony's forehead, right along the hairline. My tears dripped into his hair and Pepper turned to lean on me.
All around us, people were kneeling. I handed Pepper to Rhodey and made my way over to my husband. He was kneeling, tears sliding down his cheeks.
Danny was next to him, kneeling on both knees. I joined them, taking Bucky's hand, the real one, and squeezing it.
Danny snuggled up to me. "Why doesn't Uncle Tony get up?" He whispered.
I reached over and kissed the side of his head. "Buddy, when he used to Stones to make Thanos go away, it hurt him. It killed him."
Saying those words to my six year old hurt my entire heart but I couldn't even imagine how Pepper was going to break the news to Morgan.
Danny understood because he nodded but he didn't tear his eyes away from Tony.
Normally, after the Avengers kicked ass on a mission or a job, we would leave, head back to the Compound or our homes, maybe get some food and talk about the highlights.
But our home was the battleground.
Normally, we would celebrate as a group.
Our group felt like Tony and Natasha had ripped a gaping hole in the Avengers.
Normally, when I left, I didn't look back.
I forced myself to look back as Bucky took my hand.
But then I realized that Bucky was there to take my hand and I squeezed it extra tight.
And I was happy, really happy. There wasn't a need to be guilty for being happy. Tony put himself in danger, a lot of danger, for me to get Bucky back. And he wouldn't want me to be depressed.
When we got home, Danny was asleep in his father's arms. I made tomato soup and gooey grilled cheeses and we dipped our sandwiches in our soup while introducing Miraculous Ladybug to Bucky so we wouldn't have to talk.
We carried Danny up to bed and for the first time in five years, we put him together.
I sang to him and then we left, closing the door behind us.
"What do you wanna do, doll?" Bucky asked, turning to me. "We've missed five years of everything."
Suddenly, between my legs ached for him and I bit my lip.
"Use your words, doll," he whispered.
I blushed. "Well..."
"Say no more," Bucky stopped me up, kissing me firmly on the lips before carrying me down the hall to my bedroom. Our bedroom now.
He laid me down on the bed and I grabbed him by the neck, pulling him on top of me.
Bucky tumbled forward, his mouth colliding with mine, kissing me hungrily.
His beard tickled my chin as I struggled to take off the jacket and shirt he was wearing. After about three seconds, he pushed my hands off and just ripped them down the middle.
We broke apart and he sat on top of my hips, looking down at me. Slowly, carefully, he reached up and gently began to pull down the zipper of my catsuit.
When I pulled my arms out of it and wriggled my legs out, he threw it so hard that it hit the wall. I was wearing my bra and underwear and I shivered in the air conditioning.
He planted kisses down my face, from my collarbone to the lace lining of my bra while I fumbled with his belt.
In one quick movement, I twisted my leg around his waist, and flipped us over so I was on top of him. He laughed against my mouth. "You missed me, doll?"
"Yeah," I murmured.
He looked straight into my eyes. His voice was husky, something that made me melt. "Prove it."
