"Li Anne, did you find anything?" The man on the table asked.
I closed my eyes again and my cloud swirled in my palm. "Almost. Hold still."
Blue. Yellow. Swirls of the colors filled up the space behind my eyelids. I could feel the familiarity, just beyond my reach. Letting myself go deeper, I searched through what was tangible.
There is was.
The heart of the Mind Stone. I cupped it in my palm, feeling it until everything went dark.
"Li Anne." Vision's voice came to me in the darkness.
And then light.
I was on the floor of the lab. Vision was kneeling next to me.
"On a scale of one to ten, what's your pain?" He tilted my head upward.
I grunted and stood up on slightly wobbling legs. "Zero. I just passed out. That was a lot of energy I was channeling."
Vision supported half of my weight as we made our way back to the living building. "Did you find it?"
My grin must have explained but I spoke anyway. "Yeah! It was super cool in there."
"Let's get you something to eat."
I ate half a carton of yogurt with chocolate syrup and Rhodey watched me with disgust.
"That ruins the nutritional value of the non fat, organic yogurt," he said through his newspaper.
"I don't care. It tastes amazing."
Rhodey rolled his eyes and returned to reading the news.
No one else was there, they were out on a mission in Lagos. When they had come to get me, Vision and I were deep into research on the Mind Stone and comparing it to the realm of quantum physics so I stayed behind.
I didn't mind. I was tired of chasing Rumlow and his fellow terrorist around. They always got away because of their connections and I was left repairing buildings that got destroyed and talking to the press while trying to repair my wounds.
Last month, I broke my ankle in a foot chase and had to fly to continue my pursue. My screams of agony while I tried to fix it were caught on camera while an energetic reporter struggled to get full sentences out of me.
There was no denying how powerful I had become in the past few months. Last week, I had sustained the entire Compound's power and held it in the air for three minutes. Steve had to carry me inside and let me sleep for well over four hours but that feeling of being alive stuck with me.
Bucky was in a questionable place. Ever since the landlord of the apartment had discovered his name, Bucky had multiple escape plans in place, in case of an emergency. All of them were briefed with me because every plan had a different safe location.
When I finished my yogurt, I grabbed a hunk of the fresh baked bread that Nat and I had made earlier.
Rhodey gave a grunt of disgust and then "Teenagers."
I rolled my eyes and fluffed my hair. For the last few days, I had been straightening it and coloring streaks of it purple. Those actions also earned a "Teenagers" from Rhodey, who had been home for two weeks and was itching for something to do.
"Um, Li Anne," Vision said from the living room. "I think you'd better come see this."
On TV was a video of a building, smoking with dust erupting from windows. On the ground were several figures, frozen in place. The team. Big red letters formed the headline underneath. WANDA MAXIMOFF AND THE AVENGERS. BUILDING DESTROYED. MANY FATALITIES.
