Understanding Aurora

"Her progress is phenomenal!" I exclaim with disbelief while having my breakfast and looking at Mrs. Martinez's latest health reports. The medicine is doing its job very well and so is Mrs. Martinez's willpower.

"I am happy for her" Jackie smiles while eating her peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

"Do you think that she might be able to leave soon?" she adds.

I shrug "She is very eager to, to be honest and if I tell her that she is improving day by day then she might just not sit still till we let her go".

"Talking about Mrs. M?" Sienna arrives on the scene with two freshly ironed dresses in her hands. She puts them on display in front of us and asks Jackie on her opinion on what she should wear for visiting Wayne tonight. Jackie observes the dresses for a moment and settles on the yellow one.

"Perfect! I'll look just like Emma Stone from 'La La Land', I mean never as good as her... but, oh you know..."

Jackie laughs "Oh c'mon, no need to be flustered. I'm sure Wayne's heart will skip a beat when he sees you tonight".

Sienna blushes at the comment and retreats to her room.

"That is if he has a heart at all" whispers Jackie as soon as Sienna is out of earshot.

I continue with my strawberry cornflakes and the report. "What is up with the two of you?" Jackie startles me.

"Nothing" I reply blankly.

"Please... leave the drama out. I've been noticing that you both don't see eye to eye these days" Jackie nags.

I pout and deny to reply but she is very insistent and borderline irritating.

"You can tell if something is wrong. I am no expert but I can help"

In order to change the subject and to avoid Sienna's mention at all costs, I speak up "First, you tell me that what is up with you and Aurora? Why do you always treat her so harshly? She genuinely complimented you the other day and you just went for her skin"

Jackie rolls her eyes "It was not a compliment. She was taunting me" she says defensively.

"And who are you to judge that, huh? It was her way of praising you. Sometimes I feel that she is more lonely than we know her to be" I sigh.

Jackie snorts "She is a fucking loner, no doubt about it! But why are you being so protective of her? Is there something going on that I should be aware of?"

I know exactly what she means to say.

"Nothing like what you think is going on... the thing is that sometimes I feel very bad for her. She doesn't have any friends, anyone to turn to..."

"Oh she has a God damn fairy God-Aunt behind her back and she can turn to her whenever she desires so don't try to tell me that she is some fucking victim or anything!" Jackie shuts me up.

"What is with you two?" Sienna asks loudly as she walks over to the kitchen island where Jackie and I are seated.

"Nothing, I'll just go get changed" I quickly get up; avoiding Sienna's eyes like I have been doing religiously from the past few days, I go back to my bedroom.

Sienna seems to be in a great mood the entire day. Maybe because she is to see Wayne tonight. Nothing affects her even the slightest. Not even me. Gladly not me. I wouldn't want her to feel bad because of me, after all that's all that I have ever been making her feel from a while now.

I am returning from my patient's ward when I happen to pass by the supply closet. I stop. The memories come rushing in... Sienna had cried in here and I had been there for her. Somehow, that seems like an eternity ago. Yes Felix, there used to be a time when things and your relationships were far less complex. When things were simple and fun. And I hear it... muffled sounds of crying.
