I had heard enough of Detective Jeon to know who he was among all the people here, but I made an effort to ask around and eventually be guided to his table. It was a bit isolated from the whole station. He seemed to like the quiet, a man of my own heart.
“Detective Jeon, Miss Gray has come to talk to you regarding umm her father’s case”, an officer introduced me politely.
“ Ah yes, of course,” Jeon extended his hands standing slightly from his seat.
“Nice to finally meet you, Detective.” I shook his hand taking the seat opposite his.
“I am sorry-”
“I came here with a request.” He was going to go on about how great a man my father was and by the looks of it he might have actually meant it. I did not want to hear about it. Definitely not here and definitely not until I have solved why. “I want to take the position that my father had at this station.”
A bit startled, “I-I can not do that. Your father was an esteemed member of this station and the London police does owe him a lot. But his advisory role is not a formal position and it was made entirely for him, Miss Gray.”
“Just Gray is fine.”
“I don’t want to sound too forward,” I began again, he has to give this job to me. Maybe I miscalculated his and father’s relationship. “But I am better than my father.” and much more desperate.
He raised one of his eyebrows at this.
“At least that’s what my father himself says, used to say”, I corrected. "I have a degree in criminal psychology, which my father definitely lacked. Top student with almost no misconduct. I will take any amount of salary or none at all if that’s what you want.”
He looked at me dubiously. Maybe father was right, maybe Jeon Jungkook was among the better detectives. God knows we lacked those.
“I want to look into my father’s case,” I said truthfully. He nodded at that, knowingly.
“I am guessing I need to be employed in some capacity for that.”
“Yes Miss ...umm Gray. The advisory position that your father used to have would be suitable.”
"Yes, it would improve upon my status immensely."
"It's yours." He said. "I wouldn't be able to find someone as expertly trained in the speciality unless they are a member of your family. And I would be lying if I said I do not require assistance, given the case."
So he knew. "Thank you." It surprised me a bit that he would relent this easily after having denied me the position.
"No need. You can start tomorrow and the salary will remain the same as your father's." I was a bit relieved at that. We did need the money. Even as little as the government was willing to pay us for our work.
"I'd, if it's alright with you, like to start now. I have heard of the incident. I just want to. I just need some explanations."
Nothing was adding up based on what I have garnered, but the polite society of London was very well known to garnish stories. Especially one involving our family.
