“I don’t know why you don’t directly talk to him,” Irene exclaimed. We were winding through the hallways of her huge house. She was one of those people who invested in the industrial revolution at the right time making an humongous profit in the process. She single-handedly lifted her family out of poverty despite much discrimination. But you couldn’t just ignore Irene Bae and she proved that time and again.
“Well, we don’t get along.” We stopped at a balcony where a table and some chairs were set up.
We took our seats overlooking parts of central London. The size of the house was impressive only compounded by its proximity to central London . “You and Taehyung always got along. It was annoying how great you got along.”
Irene knew something had happened between Tae and me, and that I didn’t want to talk about it. She was respectful of it. She did not bother me too much about the details, never did, nor did she assume anything. I knew I was making that difficult by constantly nagging her about it.
“His mother didn’t approve of us.”
“It wasn’t like you were going to get married. Both of you were like 10.” We were not.
“You know how his mother is.”
“Well, that should not be a problem now that he doesn’t live with his mother.”
I slightly leaned on my hands with my elbows on the table, frustrated. She was elegant with her straight posture and relaxed shoulders. She looked at me and sighed, “She is really cruel you know, Lady Kim. She did not approve of you nor of prince Park. Sometimes I think she wanted Taehyung just for herself.”
I perked up. “But he is a prince-the prince of this country.”
“That was really fortunate. She couldn’t possibly take any drastic action against them without hampering their business.”
I nodded. That made sense. The Kims did rely on the crown for their business.
“He was really happy at that time. Probably the happiest I have seen him in all these years. It's unfortunate how he always seems to get the short end of the stick.” She was right and she didn't know the half of it. I nodded, silently hoping she would continue. I really liked it when Irene would tell stories. It was calming.
“They used to get into a lot of trouble. It was mostly of more harmless variety. They really didn't mean no harm. I would rather hear about those than what I heard when the prince disappeared,” she continued. “Well I haven’t actually talked to either of them. If Lady Kim did not want the royal prince associating with her son, she would definitely not want me to do so.” She laughed a little at that. Her position in society did not bother her as much as it used to.
The maid peaked through the door of the balcony saying, "Ma'm, should I serve tea?”
Irene looked back at me for an answer. “I should leave,” I replied, lazily standing up. “It’s getting late.”
“I’ll get the carriage ready, m'am.”
“I would rather walk,” I nodded thankfully at the maid.
