Summer Danvers

"And next up is..... Summer Danvers!" I hear the announcer say over the microphone. I paddle out to the sea, the cool water surrounding my arms and hands. I look out for a good wave, hoping for a bit of luck. And yes, I spot a huge wave coming, so I mentally and physically get myself ready. I start paddling as hard as I can, and stand myself up, riding the wave, just how I like it, and just like how Jake said you'll get the most points on. The cool water is above me, as I surf in a tunnel of water, I feel water droplets over my whole body, from the soaring water above.

This is the feeling I love. This is the reason why I love surfing so much.

The cool wind hits my face, and my I feel my hair riding the wind in my high pony tail. I zip out just as the wave finishes, the water no longer above me, the cool air no longer hitting me. "And, ladies and gentlemen, Summer Danvers!" The announcer shouts again and I hear cheering.

When I get back to shore, I pick my surfboard up, and head over to Jake, my surf coach. He's in his twenties, and is someone who used to compete in surfing competitions, just like me. But now he's just coaching people like me, but lately he's just been coaching me, especially because of all of the competitions coming up. He claps as I approach him.

"Nice ride Summer. I think you'll get through." He say, lightly clapping me on my back.

"Thanks." I smile at him, hoping I will have a shot. This competition is our town competition, and some people get through, and then those people would go through to regionals, where they compete against people from other towns near ours, and some people get through there, then they go to nationals, where they go up against the best in the country. The furtherest I've got to is a backup for nationals. Not the kind of situation I was hoping for, and I really wanted to compete, but no one broke their leg or anything at the last minute. I really want to win, since no girl has ever won in nationals, only boys. Yeah, maybe I shouldn't think that way, but it's always been my dream.

"You should probably go get changed now." Jake says.

"Yeah, see you soon." I say and head over to all of the private sheds people put their surfboards and what not in. I head over to mine and start doing the combination code. I open it, and step inside, closing the door behind me. I lean my sky blue surfboard against the wall. I take my wetsuit off revealing my bikini underneath. I really can't be bothered to get completely changed right now, and never am after I ride. So I just chuck a t-shirt and some shorts on.

"And, what a superb ride from Raymond Elliot!" The announcer booms. I hear cheers go all around. I take a step outside of my shed. I let my hair out, wincing as my hair tie tugs at my wet hair, shaking it a bit, then lightly running a hand through it.

"Hey." A voice says behind me. I turn around.

"Oh hey! I just missed you ride!" I say to Raymond. Raymond's my childhood friend, out parents know each other so naturally, we became friends. He jogs up to the shed right next to mine.

"How do you think you went?" He asks casually, unlocking his shed, swinging the door open. I shrug, running a hand through my hair again. "Aw, come on, you know how you went." He says.

"I don't, Raymond." I say, crossing my arms.

"You do, Summer." He mimics my tone of voice. I just roll my eyes as he leans his board against the side of the shed. "Anyway, can you wait for me? I've got to go get changed. I'll be quick."

"What, now I have to wait for the Raymond Elliot?" I say as I cross my arms.

"Yup." He winks at me and steps inside. While I'm waiting for him, I feel the back of my shirt soaked so I head into my shed and tie my hair up into a loose messy bun. The hardships of tying hair up when it's wet.

"SUMMER!" Raymond shouts at me, and I jump in surprise. I frown as I smack him in the arm. He grins while rubbing his arm. "Ow."

"That wouldn't have hurt a bit." I scoff, and lock my shed up. We start walking over to where Ray's coach, Connor, who was talking to my coach, Jake.

"Well it did." Ray mutters.

"Then you shouldn't have scared me in the first place."

"Who knew you would react like that?"

"You did."

"No-" he pauses, "well, actually I guess I did." I roll my eyes.

"What took you so long? You would've missed the announcements if you were any later." Jake says to me.

"Well Raymond here wanted me to wait for him." I huff. Jake raises an eyebrow but lets the case slide.

"Okay, so we have three contestants going through to regionals this afternoon." The announcer says, and I look up at the sky, and immediately regret it. The blazing sun blinds my eyes, so I close my eyes and then open them again, to face the front. "Well I must say, everyone did a very good job today...." He trails off. Then looks down at a piece of paper in his hands. "Okay..... So the people going through." He pauses, for a dramatic affect. "Raymond Elliot!" He shouts, and cheers go all around, and I clap my hands for him, and he grins at me, as he heads up to the podium. "Summer Danvers!" The announcer shouts again. Everyone claps, and I head over to the podium, my cheeks going a little pink, a smile on my face. "And..... Hugh Macilwain!" I roll my eyes mentally. Hugh and I have been competing against each other for a very long time, well, of course I competed against Ray, but Hugh likes to..... Get a bit cocky at me if he beats me. Everyone starts to clap and I put my hands together, to be the polite person I am.

Hugh comes up to the podium, and he stands next to me, and whispers, "Good job." He says, I'm not sure if it's sarcasm or..... I don't know.

"Um..... Thanks. You too." I stammer stupidly, taken aback.

"Everyone please puts your hands together for Raymond Elliot, Summer Danvers, and Hugh Macilwain!" The announcer says, and cheers and claps sound from the crowd. "All the best guys - and girl, for representing out beautiful town, Addersdale! Good luck, we will show you our support, and we will hope and pray for you to get to nationals!" Everyone erupts into cheers and claps again, and we shake hands with Aaron Rodriguez, who is a surfer that went through to nationals and won, who is from Addersdale. Very few other people have won from our town, but Aaron was the latest winner from our town. I really look up to him. Just to think he was in the same position as me right now, and got through to regionals, and won nationals. That means, he was the best in the country for that year. It's amazing.

Every five years, the winners compete against each other to find the best, and they stay known as the best in the country until the next five years pass, then they find a new winner. Aaron had won nationals not that long ago, so he hasn't had the chance to compete in the winners competition yet. Aaron shakes hands with Hugh, and hands him a gift, and shakes my hand, handing me a gift as well.

"Good luck Summer. I genuinely think you have potential to be the first girl to win." Aaron says to me. "In nationals." He adds, giving me a grin.

"Thank you." I nod, and he gives me a slight nod back, and heads over to Raymond.
