Nyx POV
The darkness was fading and fast and I could start to feel my fingers and toes. I didn't want to leave, I could hear Damiens voice filling the silence, coaxing me to come back to him. He had been here all along, talking to me telling me about all the things that we were going to do together. All the wonderful adventures that we would have but I had to come back to him. It confused me for sure because where was I? Was I dead and stuck in limbo? What was happening?
I couldn't remember anything other than his voice just telling me to hold on and to come back to him. Beeping. It practically drowned out everything else that surrounded me. I focused on that, trying to understand where I was that beeping would be necessary. It was beginning to drive me nuts. I tried to open my eyes, and slowly they fluttered open.
I blinked a few times looking around at my surroundings. The room was dimly lit with fluorescent lights. The smell of bleach and saline assaulted my nose bringing back unpleasant memories of Keith. I continued to push him out of my mind as I wiggled my toes and my fingers, slowly gaining back control of my body. Slowly I realized that I was in the hospital, but I couldn't remember why. All I could recall was being under Roman on top of his desk after being a colossal bitch to Rosette. I had no other choice though, for the plan to have worked - which I hoped and prayed that it had - she had to be safe. Justin was clear that she meant quite a lot to him and hadn't wanted her to be hurt. Understandable, she was beautiful and I could only imagine the abuse that Roman had but her through beinghis personal fuck buddy.
There was a click and then the door opened slowly and a short beautiful brunette popped her head in and smiled warmly, "Ah! You're awake! Wonderful I'll go get the doctor, should I wake him up?" she gestured to the muscular man that lay facing me on a cot and then I realized who it was. I smiled as tears began to come and simply nodded. I looked over to her as she came to my side looking over the machines and IVs that I was attached to before squeezing my hand gently, "You're safe now dear. I'll wake him up and get the doctor so you're not left to your thoughts." I smiled warmly back and nodded again.
"Thank you." I croaked not realizing how dry my throat and mouth was. She patted my hand before going over to Damien and shaking him gently, "Sir, she's awake. I've got to get the doctor but in case she has an episode you need to be awake." Damien shot straight up off of the cot startling the nurse as she jumped back and made a hasty exit to get the doctor.
Damien's breathing was fast and hoarse, as he looked at me before rushing to my side, plopping down in the chair next to my bed effectively taking my hand into his, "I was beginning to think that you'd never wake up." His voice was strained as his eyes glistened with unshed tears. I chuckled softly and squeezed his hand.
"What? And leave you here to fend for yourself? Nah. I couldn't have done that to you!" My voice cracked from my mouth being so dry which made me annoyed. What did a girl have to do to get some water around here eh?
Damien laughed and leaned forward letting his lips brush mine softly, I attempted to reach over to deepen the kiss but hissed as the IV in my hand tugged causing me to wince, "Ah fuck. I'm tethered in place by all these fucking needles!" I grumbled, turning my head to glare at it hatefully. Damien chuckled and kissed my cheek just as the door opened and the same Brunette nurse came bustling in with who I assumed was the doctor.
He was quite tall, above average muscular form, his eyes were a beautiful emerald green and his hair was as red as the setting sun and shockingly it was long and pulled back into a tight ponytail. A few tendrils of hair fell around his face, a face that would definitely have a few panties dropping just at looking at him. He smiled at me as he came and sat on the opposite side of me, gently taking my hand and giving it a squeeze, "It's so nice to finally see your notorious eyes Nyx. I'm Dr. Carmichael, the physician that oversees this floor. I'm sure you're probably thirsty yes?" His scottish accent was thick and it made me even more confused.
"You're Scottish? That's cool. What are you doing here in America when Scotland is so much better?" I asked before realizing he had asked me a question I chuckled, "Whoops. Sorry. No idea why I asked that, you don't have to answer and yes, I'm parched." I gave a soft nervous laugh. Dr. Carmichael chuckled and turned to look at the Nurse who was eye fucking him.
"Maggie, would you please get Nyx some ice water? It'll be better if her throat is properly lubricated to take her pain meds orally instead of Intravenously." Maggie blushed softly and nodded before hurrying out of the room. He turned back to me before looking over at Damien, "We changed her Pain meds from Morphine to Oxycodone. A very low dosage considering she has such a high pain tolerance. Dr. Hamil said that she didn't even flinch as he removed the bullet knowing full well that she wasn't fully sedated beforehand. That's damn near unheard of here." I frowned and tilted my head to the side thoroughly confused.
"Wait I was shot? Where? When? What happened?" I looked over at Damien who had an apologetic look in his eyes followed by sorrow as he thought over what had happened to me. He shook his head slightly at me as if to say he wasn't willing to tell me yet. I turned back to Dr. Carmichael and raised an eyebrow at him waiting for him to tell me something, anything.
He nodded, "Yes you were shot in the abdomen by your brother Jake. He was cleared medically from here the day after you arrived and is now sitting behind bars awaiting trial for attempted murder and aiding and abedding a felon wanted for the double homicide of your parents. Roman, the man they were after is dead. His body was removed and a service is being held for him out of the county." I tried to sit up, but Dr. Carmichael pushed me down gently, "Don't strain yourself. I'll change your dietary needs in the system so you can try to eat something and have them remove your feeding tube within the hour. If you want to sit up you can use these buttons here-" He pointed to the side of my bed showing me the controls and I nodded, "-and if you need anything at all you press this big red button and the on call nurse will be in as soon as she can or you can have Damien head out to snag a nurse from the hallway."
He looked down at my charts and then at all of the machines that I was hooked up to and my IVs, "We can take this IV out and just use the one in your hand for all the other meds and fluids you'll need. I just need to check the wound to see how it's healing. It may be tender so let me know if anything I do feels uncomfortable or is painful." I nodded and took a deep breath as he moved my covers away and pulled my gown up. There was a small patch of gauze that was tapped to my abdomen that he took off as gently as he could. I kept my mouth pressed into a firm line as I looked at the stitches on my stomach. I crinkled up my nose when I smelled the alcohol wipe he opened before cleaning up around the stitches. Saying it was painful was a horrible explanation for what I felt. It wasn't excruciating, just uncomfortable. My fingers twitched and I hissed quietly after he finished.
He made quick work of putting another layer of gauze on and taped it down before nodding, "It's looking wonderful and healing like a dream. You'll be out of here in no time!" His optimism was refreshing, I'm sure that Damien was happy to hear all of it. I simply nodded and closed my eyes taking deep breaths to relax.
Dr. Carmichaels footsteps stopped just before I heard the door click and I opened my eyes to catch his beautiful eyes, he smiled softly, "And as for your question earlier I'm here because my wife is American. She's a dance instructor here in the city to kids who can't afford to take the classes they want. Yeah Scotland is beautiful and nice, but it pales in comparison to her." I blushed softly and smiled back at him as he nodded to Damien before leaving the room and closing the door behind him.
We stayed silent for a long time, just staring into each other's eyes before a few new nurses came in to remove my feeding tube, talk about my new diet, and to help me drink some water.
I stayed in the hospital for another month before I was cleared to come home and boy did it feel good to be home and have Damien in my arms.
