The group watched as the darkness wrapped itself around Wei Ying who resumed his upright position, his mind controlling the spirits so they wouldn't attack the rest of the group.

Suddenly, Wei Ying's eyes shot open and they were glowing red, piercing the darkness and staring right into the groups' eyes.

"Afraid?" he smirked before his body collapsed to the floor; he lay unconscious and immobile as the darkness pressed closer upon him.

Then, the energy rippled across the room and their vision blurred. It was as if it wanted to take them somewhere. Xichen made to go and help Wei Ying but Lan Zhan shook his head in opposition.

The air turned thick and suffocating, the group leaned against the cave walls as they felt the darkness consume them, diving into each bone and muscle. Then, the cave walls disappeared and they were in a wasteland. It was bleak and dreary and toxic, and whispers and screams were heard from all directions; they were calling for them to join them, to come closer, to let go.

"Three months... Three months..."

Their heads snapped to the right and saw a young Wei Ying in his old body kneeling dejectedly on the floor, pressing his hands on his ears to block out the screams. His body was bloody and clothes torn.

"Where are we?" Jin Ling asked.

"The Burial Mounds." said Jiang Cheng.

"Three months... be quiet... no..."

He couldn't believe this was what the Burial Mounds were like before Wei Ying brought the Wens here. It was like a tomb down here and was so full of darkness that no sunlight reached the floor. He felt his chest tighten after only a few seconds and thought with horror at how much Wei Ying must have suffered here, yet he never let anyone know. His hand clenched around Purple Lightning and he felt anger towards this life.

"Let's go. You can't survive here." Wei Ying spoke as he stood up and stumbled forwards.

"You did." Jiang Cheng said.

"Did I?" Wei Ying asked. His voice cracked and his eyes looked broken with unshed tears threatening to fall.

They walked through the darkness in silence. Everyone was too scared to speak and were afraid to grab the attention of the evil spirits. The juniors huddled close and stuck next to Xichen.

"Why are you covered in bruises?" Lan Zhan asked quietly as he stood next to the past Wei Ying.

"They caught me by surprise. I was staying in town to rest as I waited for Jiang Cheng, after giving up my core. They beat me and dragged me here."

He stopped and looked up to the dark fog above. The rest of the group stopped and followed his gaze, wandering what he was looking at.

"They dropped me. At least two hundred foot. It felt like an eternity." he whispered.

Then, the dark fog fell and swallowed them whole. The darkness was so thick they were blinded and stumbled around to try and find a light. They could feel the spirits closing in and the resentment prying into their hearts.

"Enough!"

Wei Ying's scream echoed through the air and when they blinked they were back in the cave, holding onto the walls for support. Lan Zhan and, surprisingly, Jiang Cheng ran over to Wei Ying who was shaking and tense as he writhed on the ground.

"One more hour. It'll be here..."

The darkness consumed them once again and this time it wasn't a single memory that they fell into. It was a dozen at least. Seconds of the long nights Wei Ying stayed awake, battling his demons and fighting the evil spirits that wanted to destroy him. The days he spent screaming in agony as Wen Qing removed his core, his body felt as if it was being torn apart; everyone looked on in awe and sorrow.
