Wei Wuxian started to bounce around with joy as Uncle Jiang spoke to him and Jiang Cheng about soulmates. He was excited that somewhere in the world, someone was his soulmate. Girl or boy, he didn't care; he couldn't wait to meet them.
Jiang Cheng on the other hand did not look as happy. He saw a frown on his face and asked him what was wrong.
"Soulmates seem ridiculous. You are saying I don't even have a choice about who I end up with?"
"Jiang Cheng, when you meet your soulmate, whether that's in a few months or a few years, as soon as you lay eyes on them you will never want to be with anyone else ever again." Jiang Fengmian explained to the young teen.
"Then what about you and mother?" Jiang Cheng asked, and immediately Wei Ying's happiness about soulmates diminished slightly.
"Well, me and your mother are not soulmates. We both lost ours at a young age and our marriage was for strengthening the clans. I love your mother, but she is not my soulmate."
"What if... what if my soulmate doesn't like me? Or want me?" Wei Wuxian asked with a scared face.
"They will." Uncle Jiang reassured the teen who had insecurities about belonging.
"Okay..." he said.
"There is one more thing. You can contact your soulmate. If you write on your skin then your soulmate will be able to read it. They can write back and their message will appear on your skin."
The two teens walked back to their room in rapid discussion of soulmates. Jiang Cheng was opposed to the idea as he didn't want to be with someone that would hold him down, being the competitive and determined person he was. Wei Wuxian was excited about the idea of soulmates but also felt worried that his soulmate wouldn't want him. He also had a similar feeling to Jiang Cheng in that he didn't want to be held down or restrained by his soulmate.
They entered their room and faced each other on their beds.
"Shall we try to contact our soulmates?" Wei Ying asked.
"Yeah." agreed Jiang Cheng.
The two got out brushes and ink before contemplating what to write. Wei Ying kept placing the tip of his brush onto his arm then pulling away with a frown. He didn't want to sound crazy. He didn't want to sound stupid. He didn't want to sound desperate.
"What are you doing? Just write hello."
With a determined nod, he neatly wrote hello onto his arm before sitting and waiting alongside Jiang Cheng in anticipation.
"Did Uncle Jiang say how long it would take to reply?" he asked.
"No. They may not be able to see it yet. Come on, I'm not wasting time for this, let's go and train."
"Let's go."
So the pair spent the rest of the day practising swordsmanship in the training grounds before returning for dinner that evening. His senior sister, Jiang YanLi, had made his favourite: lotus root and pork rib soup.
The three of them sat together at the table, Madam Yu was out and Jiang Fengmian in town. The amazing smell of the soup wafted overt them as they dug in with excitement.
"It's delicious, as always!" Wei Ying spoke with a lotus root in his mouth.
"Xianxian, you are so young." Jiang YanLi cooed and dabbed the food from around his mouth.
He put up three fingers and the two of them broke into laughter. Jiang Cheng looked over with a smile before speaking:
"I wonder if my soulmate is older or younger than me? Father said we would be similar age but I hope I'm older." he frowned before checking his arm. Nobody had written back yet.
"Let me check mine. I hope I'm younger then I can mess around and be looked after-"
He stopped mid-sentence and stared with wide eyes at his arm. There was a reply!
"They've responded! Look! Look!" he cheered and showed his family his arm. In neat writing was the word hello, nothing much but he wasn't expecting anything.
"I wonder who it is? Maybe a girl because of the nice writing. Or a boy."
"I want mine to be a girl. I know father said the taboo of same sex soulmates has gone but I want to be the responsible one." said Jiang Cheng.
"I don't care who they are, they are alive!"
Jiang Fengmian had also told them of the rare cases where soulmates weren't born in similar times so one could be alive and the other either deceased or not yet born. It was very rare so he was grateful his was alive. The trio finished up the soup before heading to their rooms. There, Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian shared some alcohol Wei Ying had managed to sneak in. They fell asleep a little drunk and their dreams were all about their soulmates.
The days after that followed in their normal routine. Eating, training, messing around. Except something new was there. Each day, Wei Ying and Jiang Cheng- who's soulmate replied the following morning after writing- spoke with their soulmates and to their surprise the two sounded familiar. They both spoke formally and refined yet Jiang Cheng's seemed a little more relaxed where as Wei Ying's spoke very little. He didn't mind and figured once he met he would do most of the talking. That's what he normally did anyway.
One day, the Jiang family were sitting in the meeting room as Jiang Fengmian had something important to tell them.
"It has been decided that you three will go to the Cloud Recesses to study at the Lan clan of Gusu. The leader Lan Qiren is very experienced and I know you will all learn something there. You leave in three days."
Wei Wuxian was overjoyed. Not about the education part, but the fact they were heading to the Cloud Recesses. His soulmate told him that their surname was Lan and he couldn't wait to meet them.
