"The legacy of Yin and Yang originates from the beginning of time, right when the universe came into existence. Their existence brings balance to the universe, harmony between all livings things. Sun and moon, light and dark, water and fire, earth and air, sound and silence, cold and warm. They are complete opposites yet create the world we live in today. If they did not exist then the world would be in complete chaos." Lan Qiren spoke as he stood in front of his desk in the study hall, looking out with a stern glare at the disciples.

"And what about the incarnations?" a timid looking boy asked from behind his fan, his eyes peeking over the top.

"The incarnations each represent one half of the whole. One holds the spirit of Yin and the other the spirit of Yang. Two people from each generation, destined to keep peace in the world."

"Are the incarnations of our generation known?"

Qiren hesitated for the smallest fraction of a second, his eyes flitting to the left side of the room, before speaking: "They have not been discovered as of yet."

Wei Ying looked curiously to the left of the room and his eyes were drawn like magnets to the figure sitting calmly right opposite him and with perfect posture at his desk, looking at Lan Qiren with full attention, righteousness seeping right from the pure robes he wore. As if an invisible force had removed a vale from his eyes, realisation occurred. He subtly lifted up his brush and wrote quickly on the paper in front of him before swiftly sending it across to Lan Zhan, the message landing on his table softly. He turned his head back to the front of the room when he sensed Lan Zhan's eyes wandering the class for the sender. He dared a glance back and studied the expression on his face.

Lan Zhan subtly opened the folded the paper, his sleeve hiding his actions. For a second a flicker of surprise and worry flashed upon his face before the familiar indifference returned. But it was all Wei Ying needed.

"Found you..."

The next few weeks passed by peacefully, or as peacefully as they could with Wei Ying's presence. He couldn't help telling jokes or pulling pranks to liven up the boring lectures; he brushed off the shouts or remarks of Lan Qiren, grinning and pulling faces when the old man turned around causing the class to release stifled laughs.

Lan Zhan was as perfect as ever, always punctual and respectful, obeying every rule without fail. His robes were always neat and fresh, his forehead ribbon perfectly straight with not a single crease in sight. However, every so often peculiar things occurred in his presence. When he walked the sunbeams seemed to follow him. When he stood near a flaming lamp it began to grow brighter but would settle with a single gaze. Whenever such things happened he looked around with his bright eyes to find the reason, but never found one, except for the appearance of Wei Ying who would be nearby and looking distractedly into the distance...

"Today you will all be demonstrating the swordsmanship training you have received from your sects. You will prove your worth as disciples and bring honour to your sect. First, I will ask Lan Wangji to demonstrate the fighting style of the Gusu Lan Sect. Lan Wangji, choose your opponent." Lan Qiren instructed as he stood in front of the waiting disciples.

"Wei Wuxian."

Lan Zhan called his name without looking in his direction, instead walking onto the training ground with a cold face. At the sound of his name, Wei Ying looked up and took his time walking onto the training ground leisurely, a grin present on his face. Once ready the pair bowed to each other before unsheathing their swords.

"Lan Zhan, are you sure you want to fight me? You won't win."

The disciples shared shocked expressions as they heard Wei Wuxian call Lan Wangji by his given name and grew even more shocked at the fact that Lan Wangji seemed unbothered.

"Hm."

Wei Ying smiled then brought forwards his sword, the silver gleaming in the sunlight. Lan Zhan stepped forwards and did the same, his eyes watching Wei Ying intensely. They switched positions and swung once again, the clash echoing into the silent mountains. Again and again they attacked and defended, both using most of their strength. Then, as Wei Ying slid under Lan Zhan's sword he spun around and tilted Suibian into the light, the sunrays bouncing off of it directly into Lan Zhan's eyes. Lan Zhan was blinded for a second but that was all Wei Ying needed. He ran up to Lan Zhan and swung with his sword, speaking into Lan Zhan's ear before ducking to avoid Bichen.

"You can't, can you?"

He grinned at the flash of understanding in Lan Zhan's eyes before jumping up and over the man, his figure blocking out the sunlight but the fiery heat still glowing in his eyes. He landed and took a step forwards but stopped when he felt the earth underneath him move, his foot sliding every so slightly to the left as if the ground wanted him to loose balance. However, it didn't faze him and he looked right at Lan Zhan, taking in the strong stance and silver sword held out in front of him defensively. He glanced down and back up with a raised eyebrow, noticing the small huff Lan Zhan released.

"Hm."

"And why is that?" he pressed, both now ignorant of the watching disciples.

"You know why." Lan Zhan responded.

"Hm." said Wei Ying, mimicking his words.

In sync they once again attacked their swords clashing and bodies manoeuvring around each other, neither making any advancement over the other; when one did the other came back to counter them effortlessly. After several minutes of the balanced fight, the pair stood in close proximity to each other, their sword tips pressed against each other's necks, close enough to be dangerous but not deep enough to draw blood.

"Draw?" Wei Ying asked, his chest rising and falling as he regained his breath.

"Draw." said Lan Zhan with a nod.

Both males sheathed their swords and bowed to one another, both not breaking the heavy eye-contact as they figured out the person opposite them. When they turned around to the watching disciples, they were both surprised to see the expressions of awe and disbelief on their faces. Wei Ying laughed and joked that they should stop gawking or else their faces would get stuck that way whilst Lan Zhan simply looked on with his blank expression to his right.

"That was..." Lan Qiren tried to speak but found that even he was at a loss for words.

Wei Ying took another sweep of the disciple's faces before grabbing Lan Zhan's arm and spinning him around so their backs were to the group. He felt worry and the burning sensation of fear well up inside of him but with one look into Lan Zhan's cool gaze he felt the burning lighten.

"Shall we tell them?" he asked.

"I have not told anyone."

"Me neither."

"I do not mind."

"If we do then there's no going back."

"Hm."

"Are you ready?"

"Yes."

"Okay, let's tell them."

They both shared a confident nod before turning back around to the group and reaching into their robes. Wei Ying pulled out a necklace with a small white swirl and a black dot in the centre whilst Lan Zhan pulled out an identical one with inverted colours. Lan Zhan held onto his black charm before speaking.

"I am Lan Wangji, the Yin incarnate."

"I am Wei Wuxian, the Yang incarnate."

As the news sank into the disciples and Lan Qiren, each of them looked upon the duo with awe before sinking to their knees and into a deep bow, showing their respect to the two incarnates. Wei Ying gave Lan Zhan a smile as he held onto his necklace, his other hand finding Lan Zhan's hand and giving it a gentle tug. Lan Zhan returned the gesture and warmth seemed to seep into his cold eyes as he looked into Wei Ying's eyes.

From that day forwards Lan Zhan and Wei Ying, Yin and Yang, became cultivation partners and travelled the world whilst keeping balance within the world and holding harmony between each other.
