As the minutes turned to hours, Wei Wuxian thought about seeing his brother and sister when he arrived in Beijing. He had been on a visit to see his high school friend in Canada who had moved there to study. They had spent the week visiting all of the most interesting places: high-streets, cafes, parks, monuments, stadiums, clubs, everywhere! It was a bittersweet parting as neither had wanted to say goodbye, but Wei Ying had to return home for his sister's birthday. Jiang YanLi was going to have a small gathering with the close family and she wanted Wei Ying to be there, meaning he had to cut his visit short.
"So, what's your name? I'm Wei Wuxian. You can call me Wei Ying." he spoke to the man beside him.
The other simply looked at him for a few moments before turning back to the front and staring straight ahead. With a sigh, he collected his briefcase from the compartment above and pulled out some important looking documents. Wei Ying took a sneaky look at them before grinning with triumph.
"Lan Wangji, huh? Or can I call you Lan Zhan?" he asked.
"No."
"No what? Is that not your name or can't I call you Lan Zhan?" he questioned.
"Both."
"Well tough, Lan Zhan. We are seat buddies so we have to get to know each other. How old are you?" he asked.
He got no reply. Again.
"Well if you won't tell me then I'll ask the lady next to you." he declared before leaning over Lan Zhan to speak to the lady near the isle. He deliberately pushed himself closer to the man and heard a small "Humph." in return.
"Excuse me, madam, but how-"
He never got to finish his sentence as he was pulled from behind back into his seat. Once more, he fell unceremoniously into the chair but turned to glare at the man next to him.
"Lan Zhan! What was that for?" he asked in annoyance.
"It was a rude question." he stated.
"Well you should've answered it yourself then I wouldn't have needed to-"
"Twenty one."
It took a moment fro Wei Ying to realise he was telling him how old he was. When it clicked he grinned and replied.
"No way, me too! We are the same age, but I bet you're at least a few months older. So then, Lan Zhan, what do yo do? I'm a student for art & design."
"Law."
"Really? Wow, that's so cool. You must be really good to be so focused, even working on a flight. Here," he paused to pull out his iPad and a dual adaptor. "wanna watch a film?" he asked trying to be friendly.
However happy he was at getting an immediate response at his last question, it all disappeared when he was ignored with only a sigh once more. A small frown overcame his face as he put his earphones in and chose a film. Despite it being a really great film, he could only watch halfheartedly as he was always well aware of the cold and handsome person next to him. When he reached over to buy some crisps and a soda from the trolley, they were squeezed close together again and he felt heat in his cheeks.
A few hours into the flight, Wei Wuxian was bored.
He has watched a film and eaten his snacks and messaged his brother for a while. And now he had nothing to do. He pulled up his bag and delved inside, hoping to find something to do. And he was in luck: he felt his hands brush against a rogue pen and pulled it out along with a small sketchpad he took everywhere. Leaning against the side of the plane, he brought pen to paper and started to draw Lan Zhan. He stopped every so often to look at his subject but accidentally made eye contact causing him to hide behind the paper.
When he had finally finished his sketch, he stretched and placed the pen and pad back into his bag.
"Lan Zhan!" he called a few times before finally gaining his attention. The man had spent the entirety of the past few hours reading through and making notes on heavy documents.
"Hm."
"Look, I drew you. Do you like it?"
Lan Zhan's eyes widened minutely in pleasant shock and took the drawing from Wei Ying. He stared at it for a few seconds before turning to Wei Ying and giving him a nod. It was really very realistic.
"You do! Hey, madam, what do you think?" he asked the old lady who had looked over at his excitement.
"Wow, that is very good. You should take good care of that, he put a lot of effort into it." she said causing both Wei Ying and Lan Zhan to blush.
And, to Wei Ying's delight, Lan Zhan carefully slid the picture into his briefcase.
Wei Wuxian smiled at him before relaxing back into his chair and gazing out of the small window. By now, the sun had set and the sky became a beautiful black velvet sprinkled with stars. He looked down at the small towns and big cities and imagined all of the people sleeping on the ground. As he thought this, he felt a wave of exhaustion wash over him, and soon his eyes slipped shut and he fell asleep on something soft.
A wide-eyed Lan Zhan looked down to see the young and energetic Wei Ying sleeping calmly on his shoulder. Unconsciously a small smile became present on his face and he adjusted his body to make it more comfortable for the both of them. The minutes ticked past and he felt tiredness wash over him as well. Reluctantly, he placed all of the files he was given to read for his apprenticeship back into his briefcase and took off his blazer whilst holding the sleeping Wei Ying up. Sitting back into his seat, he placed the boy's head gently back onto his shoulder and allowed himself to slip into sleep also.
Unknown to him, the old lady had awoken from her nap to see the two lads leaning on each other with peaceful smiles as they slept. She gave the pair a knowing glance before drifting back to sleep. Soon, the whole aeroplane was filled with quiet breathing and one crying baby. There was always one.
