As we head to Jennie's parents' house for their wedding anniversary, I notice Jennie searching frantically through my car, even emptying her purse. Though I'm tempted to ask what she's searching for, her furrowed brow makes me hold back and let her be. Upon arrival, she continues to appear anxious, nervously fidgeting with her fingers.
"What's wrong?" I finally asked, unable to ignore her unease any longer. Jennie showed me her hand, and at first, I was puzzled by why her hand would be causing her distress. Then it hit me – she wasn't wearing her wedding ring. We both knew that once her parents noticed one of us without our wedding ring, they would likely inundate us with exaggerated questions. So, without hesitation, I removed my ring and handed it to her.
"Then, what about you?" she asked, refusing to accept my ring.
"I'm wearing a jacket, so I'll just keep my hand hidden inside," I explained. Fortunately, my ring fit nicely on her finger.
As Jennie helped her mom supervise some of the visitors, I took a moment to observe the scene. I spotted Jennie's relatives mingling with her parents' close friends. A smile crept across my face as I watched her parents embrace each other while engaging in conversation. How I wished Jennie and I could celebrate our anniversary with such warmth and love. Turning to look at Jennie from a distance, I observed her busily entertaining some of their guests. A laugh escaped me as I caught her rolling her eyes after finishing a conversation with her uncle, only to quickly put on a forced smile as someone else approached her.
"Hey, Lisa?" I was surprised to see Mina in front of me.
"Hi! What are you doing here? I mean, how..." I stumbled over my words, utterly confused by her unexpected appearance. Mina chuckled at my apparent bewilderment, and I felt my face flush with embarrassment.
"Why the surprise?" She chuckled once more. "Well, my dad is one of Kim's family friends... that's why," she explained, and I nodded slowly, starting to make sense of it.
"Small world, isn't it?" I remarked, adopting a more casual tone.
"How about you? Why are you here?" Mina asked, her curiosity piqued. I hadn't mentioned anything about Jennie yet, and before I could respond, Jennie suddenly appeared between us, wearing her poker face.
"Mom's calling us, let's go inside," Jennie interjected, her eyes fixed directly on me, completely ignoring Mina's presence.
"O-okay..." I stuttered, then turned to Mina again, to avoid being rude. "By the way, Mina, this is Jennie, and Jen, this is Mina." Mina offered her hand, but Jennie declined, so Mina withdrew her hand instead.
"Excuse us," Jennie said, pulling me away with her. I glanced back at Mina, offering an apologetic look, and she simply smiled in return. Confusion swirled within me as I looked at Jennie. She had never introduced me as her wife before, but now she was insisting on it?
"Mom, did you call us?" I asked as we approached her. Jennie's mom raised a brow in confusion.
"Huh?" she queried, prompting me to realize that perhaps she hadn't called us after all.
"Jennie told me that you were looking for us," I said, her mom to shift her gaze to Jennie.
"I wasn't, Jennie dear. Are you drunk?" her mom asked with concern.
"No, I'm not," Jennie replied, her tone lacking enthusiasm.
"She must be tired, Mom," I chimed in, though I knew Jennie had done it intentionally. I suddenly felt bad for abruptly leaving Mina in the middle of our conversation.
"Is that so? Well, you can go to your room and rest then. We'll take care of the guests, and I've already prepared your room anyway," Jennie's mom offered, gesturing toward the room. Jennie abruptly waved her hand to decline.
"Mom, we can't... We need to go home," Jennie insisted, her tone firm.
"Jennie, today is our wedding anniversary. Would you please spend the night here?" her mom requested, her tone pleading, while I stood silently beside Jennie, feeling torn.
""Lisa, talk to your wife!" Jennie's mom's frustration was evident as her daughter remained silent. I simply nodded as she left us.
"We're going home after this party," Jennie declared, her tone filled with authority.
"Jen, your mom's right. Let's stay for the night, just for them. I can take the couch, and you can have the bed to yourself if that's your concern," I suggested, I suggested, hoping to persuade her to consider her parents' special.
"Fine," she answered before also leaving. I felt relieved, expecting another argument to arise, but fortunately, it didn't happen.

As the clock struck midnight and the party came to an end, with all their visitors and relatives leaving, Jennie was already in the room. I decided to rest as well, so I entered and saw her sitting on the bed, engrossed in her phone.

I walked straight to the bathroom to freshen up a bit. Since we used to stay here before, we had spare clothes to use. After changing, I grabbed some cushions and a blanket from the walk-in closet for myself. As I was about to lay down, my phone rang from an unknown number. Despite feeling hesitant, I answered it, but remained silent, allowing the person on the other end to speak first.
"Hey," her voice sounded familiar, but just to be sure, I stayed silent, waiting for her to speak again.
"Lisa, it's Mina," she said, and I quickly responded after she mentioned her name. I wondered where she got my number.
"Are you wondering where I got your number?" Mina's question mirrored exactly what I was thinking, and I chuckled.
"Well, yeah, but nevermind, it's you anyway," I replied, hearing her laugh on the other end of the line.
We resumed our conversation that was interrupted earlier. Mina told me that she asked BamBam for my number, and I joked, calling her a stalker. During our conversation, I suddenly felt hot, as if someone was watching me from behind. I turned around and saw Jennie with her arms folded, her eyes burning with annoyance. I gasped and quickly turned my head away to avoid her; I might have been too loud.
"Lisa, you still there?" Mina's voice jolted me back to our conversation.
"Um, y-yeah! I'm still here," I answered nervously.
"Okay, Lisa... I think you're sleepy already. Let's just talk some other time. Goodnight!" I took a deep breath before responding.
"Yeah, sure, anytime. Goodnight," I replied, the deadpan tone only audible on the other end. I faced Jennie again.
"I'm sorry, am I too noisy?" I asked, but she just rolled her eyes and turned away, wrapping herself in a blanket.
Wondering what was wrong with her, I decided not to push further and went to lie down on the couch. Her back was facing me, and I could tell she was still awake by her tense breathing. Eventually, her body softened, indicating she had fallen asleep. I gazed up at the ceiling until my eyelids drooped, and drifted off into sleep.
