Chapter 26: The Attempt To Know The Truth

"I have known this for a while now. Ian asked me not to tell you this for what goddamn reason but I want you to know. I think you deserve to know."

Those are the words that linger in Jared's mind even when he was on his way home tonight by a taxi. Iyon pala ang dahilan kung bakit tila may naalala si Jared sa pagkatao ni Aiken. That is because Ian and Aiken are brothers. On the day of my attempt to donate for bone marrow, Gracia revealed that he secretly did a DNA test because her guts told her so.

Sumama rin sa kaniya si Carren na simula ngayon ay sa bahay na nila mananatili.

Jared was also afraid na baka may mangyari kay Carren.

Jared is so preoccupied by the thought. What is the goddamn reason?

Inisip niya ito nang matagal. Since it would be almost two hours drive to his house, he used the time wisely to think. There must be something he still doesn't know. It could also be a memory everyone- including Peony, Ian, and Carren who is stting next to him- wants to hide. But why?

When he thinks nothing can surprise him anymore, it looks like one more thing is left for him to discover. And that's what he wants to know now.

Pagdating na pagdating nila sa bahay, sinalubong sila ni Peony na hinihintay pala si Jared na umuwi. It was past 10 PM already when they arrived. Peony was also surprised that Jared went home with Carren.

"O, Carren! It's nice to see you again." Bineso ni Peony si Carren. "I don't know you're staying over."

Malugod naman itong tinanggap ni Carren. She was also flattered and quite overwhelmed when these people- who are not blood-related to her- accepted and believed in her more than her own parents. She can't be any more grateful than this.

"Ma, gusto ko sanang humingi ng pabor." Napatahimik si Peony sa sinabing iyon ni Jared, "Can Carren move in?"

"Why? Is there a problem?" Peony inquired. It's not like she would say no, but, in order for her to make wise decisions, she has to know the reasons- the truth.

"It is a long story. Sasabihin ko na lang sa'yo sa susunod." Umupo si Jared at bumuntong-hininga sa pagod. "You're already old, baka hindi mo na kayanin ang mahahabang kuwento."

"You know I want it long, Jared." Her mother joked, "Take Robert as an example." Peony winked before she made her perfect-timing exit after she dropped the joke.

"Ew!" Jared cringed to her mother's words. It is very uncomfortable to hear about your parents' sexperiences after all. He even curled his body in cringe.

"Let's eat." Ang yaya ni Jared nang makarecover na ito sa pandidiri.

He stood up from the sofa at tinungo ang kusina. "Siguro naman nagtake-out 'yun." Jared talking about her mom.

But when he opened the cover on their table, isang pinggang walang laman lang ang nandoon. Nang itaas niya pa ang pinggan, may pilas pa ng papel doon na may nakasulat na, "Magluto ka! Hindi mo ako katulong." Nanlaki ang mga mata ni Jared. Hindi siya makapaniwala sa ginawa ng nanay niya.

"What? Is she ten years old playing some dumb kind of pranks?" Inis nitong sabi. "Well, then. Magluto na lang tayo ng kung anong meron sa ref."

Nagpresenta na si Carren na tingnan ang ref.

"Water, water, water," banggit ni Carren habang iniisa-isa ang laman ng ref, "Water, potato, water. Ba't andaming tubig? Seriously, kelan niyo pa 'to naging negosyo?" Mas nairita si Jared sa nalaman.
