When a movie star falls for an ordinary girl.
Their story begins September 2009:
Fiona, 24, is a normal girl on an exchange from New York to California for her master's degree.
Tom, 32, is a movie star from London in Los Angeles, where he wrapped In...
Montana had sent out a group text to Fiona and a few other classmates. Fiona didn't socialize much outside of her classes so she didn't recognize any numbers in the text.
MONTANA 3:23PM: Hey Thirsty Thursday movie night! Who's in???
She then sent Fiona a private text to tell her to bring Tom along too. Fiona and Tom hadn't been on a proper date, at least nothing other than coffee, certainly not a date night. She wasn't sure if Tom was free, they hadn't actually gotten to see each other in the last 2 days.
" 'ello, darling," Tom answered, his voice was gentle on the other end.
"Hi," Fiona paused, smiling, as if he could see her.
"What's going on," he asked. He sat in a leather chair waiting for his audition.
"I know it's kind of last minute, and you're probably busy, but some friends from class are going to the movies," she felt like this was high school all over again. He was practically her boyfriend but she still felt all the nervous tingles of asking him on a date.
"When? Tonight?" Tom leaned onto his knees and glanced at the closed door expectedly.
"Yeah," Fiona tapped her fingers on her jeans, "I understand if you're busy though."
"No. I mean, I am busy. I would love to come though," it wasn't all that often Tom got invited to such normal outings. "What time are you going? Maybe if I finish here early…"
"It starts around 8 or so," Fiona said disappointed. She was understanding but she also missed him.
"Uhh," Tom rubbed the back of his head, "Can I let you know?"
"Yeah of course," Fiona assured him. She hung up the phone and did some homework before it was time to get ready.
Fiona slipped on black and blue pleather pants with a long black shirt over. She was hopeful Tom would be able to come and wanted to make sure she looked good. She walked over to Montana's dorm where she was pregaming.
Fiona debated not going at all but she was trying to be social and not a hermit. It was hard in a place that she had no actual friends. She promised herself she'd brave it out regardless if Tom was coming or not but she prayed he would.
There were a few other people who stopped by for shots and seemed to be joining them at the movies. Fiona smiled awkwardly at the group of people she'd seen only in passing. They all seemed to know each other and then there was her. Luckily in a movie she didn't have to socialize with anyone.
. . .
Everyone waited in line at the busy theatre, the group of guys were obnoxiously pushing and laughing at each other. She wondered if they were undergrads actually, possibly not 21 yet.
TOM 7:54PM: I'm sorry, love, I won't make it. Have a great time. :)
She was about to text him back, she was disappointed but understood. When another text came from Tom. She opened it to see him making a sad face. She couldn't help but smile.
