Fiona's mom lived in, what was called, a cookie cutter house. It was next to the factory that made the homes, they were all the same for the most part. They typically were 3 bedroom raised ranches, like her mom's.
Fiona pulled down the long driveway, parking behind her mom's silver Saturn SUV. Her sister's lowered blacked out Volkswagen was parked in front of the house.
Fiona's heart raced. She knew Tom would be great and that her family would treat him fine but it was awkward. She would worry the whole time if Tom found them weird or if he was uncomfortable. She needed a drink.
Tom opened the door and stepped out. He fixed his clothes from sitting in the car for 3 hours. Fiona reapplied her lipstick, so that it wasn't smudged off from an obvious make out session.
"Babe," Fiona called over to Tom. He looked in expectedly as she whispered, "my panties."
"Oh, uh," he bent down and looked under the seat and then handed the balled up panties to Fiona with a wink. He grabbed the flowers from the back seat.
Fiona slid them on and then stepped out of the car and adjusted her skirt and tucked her shirt back in.
"Ok so my dogs are going to bark and jump all over you," Fiona held his hand as they walked through the basement door.
"They're Chihuahuas. I think I'll be ok," Tom laughed loudly.
"Hey," she shouted, as she opened the door to the main part of the house. They knew to expect them, obviously, but she wanted to prepare them. Her cat Henry wandered over to the stairs and sat waiting for his mom. Fiona approached and gave him a little scratch on his head, "This is Henry, he's my little man."
Tom stuck his hand out and Henry jumped up to meet it and rubbed against him. A sweet smile came across Tom's face. There was nothing like the love and acceptance of an animal, and a cat no less.
"Cute," Fiona let out a small laugh at Tom's face.
"What, he likes me. I'm honored," Tom laughed and tapped Fiona on the butt for making fun of him. Fiona shot him a look to not do that, which he wasn't planning on doing in front of her mom. They walked up the second set of steps to see Fiona's mom hanging up her phone in the kitchen.
"Hey," Fiona repeated as they walked through the archway to the kitchen.
"Oh hey," her mom was stirring a pot on the stove. She set the spoon down and turned to meet Tom.
"Hi, Ms. Hudson, these are for you," Tom took a step toward her and handed over the flowers with his sweet smile. Fiona stood back feeling embarrassed, like he was trying too hard even though she knew this was just the British manners he was always talking about. Tom reached out and handed her mom the bouquet of orange and pink tiger lilies Fiona had said they were her favorite.
Fiona bit her lip nervously. Her mom smiled and thanked him. She pulled him in for a hug and flashed Fiona a bigger smile. Fiona rolled her eyes out of reflex.
"I'm making baked ziti for dinner, I figured you two would stay for dinner?" She opened up a cabinet above the stove and reached for a glass vase.
"Let me grab that," Tom offered, reaching for her.
"Mom, I didn't want to stay here long really," Fiona grabbed a small bag of fruit snacks.
"No, no we should stay for dinner," Tom looked back at Fiona. She squinted her eyes at him and shrugged.
"So where are the dogs?" She said stuffing some gummy fruit into her mouth. She held out the bag to offer Tom some.
"Traci and Nolan went for a walk with them, just around the circle," she turned to Tom, "enjoy the silence while you can."
