Tom and Fiona had lined up 5 homes to see in the lush town about 20 miles north of New York City. The area was expensive. A moderate 3 bedroom home, like the one she grew up in, was under 200k in her town. Here it would be more than doubled.
Tom was fine with the prices, too fine, Fiona thought.
"We are only 2 people. We don't need a huge place," Fiona reiterated before they pulled into the realtors. "But maybe a pool."
. . . .
They drove behind the realtor up a steep, back road. They turned onto a gravel road, the car bumping up and down. It ended up being a long driveway to an estate. To Fiona it looked at least 3 of her homes together.
"Tom…" she turned to him.
"We're just looking," he smirked at her. "Keep an open mind."
She didn't have to keep an open mind. Sure she would love to live in a mansion but she was also happy in her small apartment with him.
They exited the car, Tom wore black cargo pants and a black t-shirt. He had on a camo hat that he took off and left in the car. Fiona had a button down red plaid dress and black flats. She looked more the part of a millionaire than he did, but that wasn't saying much.
"Ok so this house has 6 bedrooms, 6.5 baths, and over 6k square foot," the realtor, Lydia, read from the sheet in front of her. She was older, about mid 40s. She had a pencil black skirt with a white button down and moderate heels. "It's on 10 acres too, which is on either side of the driveway and the back."
Tom nodded as they walked along the stone path towards the large black door in the main home. The front of the house was covered in large stones and had 8 large windows with black decorative shutters. To the right was what looked like a whole other home. It had a plain white door and smaller windows. Fiona concluded it was probably once a staff entrance back when it was built in the 40s.
"Tom, you're an actor you said?" Lydia made small talk as she fiddled with the lock. Fiona looked around. She couldn't picture living in such a lavish place.
"Yes," he answered, simply.
The heavy door opened revealing light hardwood floors and a small curved staircase on the left. The whole house was decorated fully to entice you that if you bought the house, you too would look this good. Fiona thought it would be a lot to furnish 6 bathrooms and about 3 different sitting rooms and a living room. She was tallying everything in her head as they went along. There were fireplaces and tall vaulted ceilings throughout. The bedrooms were large which she liked.
Off of one of the living rooms was a back covered patio that had a little fireplace. Off the kitchen was another patio. From both of them you could see the Olympic size pool in the back that was surrounded by woods.
Tom asked about the price again.
"They're asking for 2.7," Lydia said.
"2.7?" Fiona's eyes widened. "2.7 million?"
"Uh. Yes." Lydia confirmed. "I'll leave you two."
"Tom…" Fiona looked at him bewildered, "that's insane. This is insane. Why would we need 6 bedrooms?"
"Well ours, a guest room, a kids room eventually right? That's 3. That leaves 3 extra rooms that can be your office or another guest room or kids rooms. Know what I mean," Tom reasoned.
"I guess," she said, he did have a point.
"A room for when my parents come to visit. And what if your mom comes to visit at the same time?"
"My mom lives an hour away. She wouldn't stay here," she laughed. "But until then it's going to be just us and half of that time it'll be just me."
