Fiona scooped Nolan some macaroni and cheese and they all sat around the table. Fiona casually handed things to her mom or her sister with her left hand, waiting for them to notice. Tom laughed at how obvious she was and how oblivious they were.
"You guys suck," Fiona finally shouted. She waved her left hand in the air, "we're engaged!"
"Ohh," Karen yelled standing up, giving her a kiss "congratulations baby."
Her mom then turned to Tom, who was standing behind the counter picking at all the different food. He was smiling, happily and amused. Fiona's mom walked over to give him a hug.
"I'm so excited I'll have a movie star son in law," her mom joked.
"Mom..." Traci shouted at her, and then flatly to Fiona while their mom occupied Tom, "but congrats I guess."
"Thanks," Fiona smiled and waited for the put downs.
"Engaged, living in a million dollar home. We're in a lousy 3 bedroom worth 10% of this home," Traci added, diminishing her congratulations.
"Ok?" Fiona asked and looked over at Tom to see if he heard her. He didn't, he was in conversation with Fiona's mom. Fiona's sister seemed to not realize that Tom bought the house, she was simply living in it. She wasn't a millionaire by any means, just Tom.
"Always Fiona," she rolled her eyes.
Fiona shook her head bewildered. "I don't know what I have to apologize for, but I'm sorry I ended up with a better life than you, I guess." She clearly expected Fiona to buy them things because she owed them,
"Your life is always so effortless," she rebutted getting louder.
"My life is not effortless," Fiona rolled her eyes. She picked up the empty plates and put them in the sink. The porcelain plates clinked in the metal sink.
Tom looked over at her with "Everything alright?" written on his face. Fiona nodded, but he looked from her to Traci sensing the tension. Fiona's eyes welled up before she looked away from Tom and left the room. Excusing himself from the conversation, tom followed Fiona toward the bedroom.
"Fi," he called behind her.
"I'm fine. I just need a break from her," Fiona said falling onto their bed.
Tom walked in and shut the door behind him. He sat on the bed next to her and stroked her hair softly. His face was angry, he hated anyone who made Fiona upset, including even him.
"What happened?" Tom finally asked. Fiona turned to look at him, her eyes looked fairly dry now.
"Just nothing I do is good enough. Or well, it's too good apparently. Like there's always an issue that she has with me because my life is better than hers," she propped herself up on her elbows. "I have to constantly atone for how my mom apparently babied me growing up and how my life was easier, or effortless she said."
"You aren't to blame for how your mom treated you," Tom's hit his hand on his leg. He was upset for her. "And your life is different than hers, sure. But you don't need to be made to feel guilty for it. It's just how it is."
"I know that, I do, but she's so petty," Fiona sat up on the bed.
"She's jealous of you," Tom pointed out. "I mean don't tell her I said that, but that's why she's upset with everything you do."
"Yeah," she said slowly, picking at her sleeves.
Tom kissed her soft cheek and waited until Fiona was ready to face her family again.
. . . . .
The rest of the day went fairly smoothly, Traci and Fiona kept their distance. Tom and Fiona took Nolan out to play fetch with Woody while Karen and Traci watched from the house. They found it too cold to be outside, which it was.
The three of them laughed as Woody zoomed back and forth for the green tennis ball. Fiona loved watching Tom play with her nephew. He was naturally playful and childlike. Seeing him being paternal made her want to have a baby with him right away, but she knew she wanted to wait at least until they were married. She wanted to enjoy all the practice of making a baby first.
"It's 4:00," Fiona told Tom. Pnut was coming back at 5 to do another training session.
"Oh crap," Tom said, running over to Nolan, "I gotta go in, munchkin."
"We'll follow, I'm getting cold. What about you?" Fiona asked Nolan, who nodded.
Tom picked up Nolan and carried him back up to the house. Woody ran alongside the two, trying to get the ball from Tom's hand.
"Cold out there?" Fiona's mom asked, sipping a hot cup of tea.
"Yea it is," Fiona said, "Tom's trainer is coming by in a bit so he's gotta start eating meal #37."
Tom laughed and tickled Nolan, "Time to devour the amount of a small child."
Fiona's family found it a good time to leave. Both her mom and sister gave her a big hug. Perhaps Karen spoke to her bitter daughter, or her sister was actually happy for her. Fiona couldn't tell. She gave her nephew a big hug and a kiss on his lips before putting him in his car seat. She hated saying goodbyes especially because Nolan frequently cried out for his Zia the whole time they drove away.
When Pnut got there, Fiona hung out in the kitchen with her laptop. She was determined to write at least 3 pages before Tom finished up. That shouldn't have been a tall order, but she had been slacking lately so she lowered her expectations to at least try to make some progress.
. . . . .
Tom went into the bedroom after his shower and found Fiona sprawled out all over the bed. He laughed to himself thinking this must be how she sleeps when he's not there. He slipped into some underwear and turned off the overhead light. Tom squeezed in next to her, angling himself so that he wouldn't fall off the bed. She was small yet took up the whole bed.
Fiona woke up with a jolt. She almost screamed at him out of fright, which she had done on more than one occasion. Luckily the bedside lamp illuminated his face and she was able to comprehend what was happening before her voice took over.
"Oh sorry," she shimmied back to her side of the bed. Tom corrected his position and ran his fingers through his wet hair. Pulling Fiona to his chest, he held her in his arms as he planned to every night he was home.
