"A Halloween party sounds fun," Tom sat down at the table shirtless, his body glistened with sweat. He opened up a bottle of carbonated water and chugged it as Fiona watched through the computer monitor.
"Hard day?" Fiona asked, Tom looked miserable.
"It's so bloody hot," Tom complained as he wiped his wet mouth with the back of his hand.
"I'm sorry babe," Fiona genuinely hated seeing him upset. "Do you get a long break?"
"Not long enough," Tom scoffed.
"That sucks," Fiona leaned her head on her hand.
"I mean, as long as I don't ruin the makeup, then it should be just a quick touch up," he lifted his arms to reveal the blank skin.
Tom heard a knock at the trailer, he was expecting someone to bring by his lunch. He shouted over the computer screen, "Yeah!"
Fiona watched as he stood up and leaned over the computer. He sat back down with a white styrofoam box. Fiona could see the hot steam escaping as he lifted the lid.
"I can let you go," Fiona said watching him attempt to eat the scorching food. She called Woody over so Tom could say hi, she knew seeing his dogs face would make him feel better. She tried not to be upset that he preferred the dog over her.
"I love you, you know that?" Tom said as Woody panted in front of the camera. Fiona scratched the top of the dogs head, trying to steal some of the love for herself. It had been a long couple of weeks without him and she was feeling a little forgotten.
"He loves you too," Fiona said with a small laugh.
"I know he does," he took a hot bite from his fork and continued staring at the dog with velvety soft ears. "But I meant you."
"Me?" Her voice was shrill with surprise.
Tom's lips tightened to keep himself from spitting out his food.
"Yes, of course you."
"Just wasn't sure," she shrugged. "You would also have to wear a costume to this party."
"I may have been a little presumptuous with that I love you," he laughed. "I really don't want to wear a costume."
"Really?" She frowned, more so at the love being taken back than the costume.
"I'll think about it," he teased.
Fiona turned off the computer after several more minutes of watching Tom eat his lunch and complain about the wardrobe being too hot. Feeling a little deflated at their conversation, she debated having the party at all. She missed her fun fiance who would want to dress up and do cute couple things with her.
. . . . .
"You seriously aren't going to wear a costume?" Fiona said annoyed and handed him the sharp knife. It was late afternoon, and the autumn sun was starting to set making way for the night's haunted activities.
"Why do I have to?" His voice dragged on in a whine. He stabbed the knife through the bright orange pumpkin. "Americans really go all out for Halloween, yeah?"
"Yes, we do but costumes are fun," Fiona tried to entice him, "I got a really good one but you don't get to see it if you come as yourself."
"Ouch. Your words hurt," Tom joked as he cut the tops off of both pumpkins. Fiona handed him a big serving spoon for hollowing out the center. "But I'm in a costume all the time, know what I mean?"
