"How'd your exams go?" Tom asked as she came through the door, carrying a brown bag from the supermarket.
"Fine. But more importantly, how did your audition go?" She set the bag on the kitchen counter and looked over at him hopeful.
"It went well, I think, but if I get it they'll call my agent, then she'll call me," he tapped his hands nervously on the counter. "It's nerve-racking."
"Yeah I couldn't imagine, but if you did great then try not to worry," Fiona knew that was easy for her to say, even though inside she was having an anxiety attack for him. They both knew it would be a career changing role.
"That's the worst advice," Tom said with an eye roll and went back to the couch where he had been playing a military shooting game for the last 4 hours.
"Wow, ok," Fiona put the fresh vegetables in the fridge.
"Sorry, it's just --," Tom started.
"It's fine. You're stressed. I get it. I'm gonna go into the room and watch tv," Fiona headed toward the bedroom. She understood her words sucked but he had never been short with her before. She knew he didn't mean to hurt her feelings but she was still bothered by it, plus she was also tired from her exams. She shut the door behind her to help muffle the gunshots from his game.
Fiona laughed at the sitcom reruns that she absentmindedly put on. She was on her computer scrolling through her Facebook. She checked her high school friends Facebook's and felt a pang of sadness. She thought of how close they were and how they would never be again. They all went their different ways and all live in different states.
After several episodes that she only half listened to, Fiona closed her laptop and turned off the TV. Suddenly aware of how quiet it was, she opened the bedroom door, no gunshots. The whole room was dark except for the paused game screen that illuminated the couch. She saw Tom was passed out, his feet still on the glass table.
She turned on the kitchen light and started dinner. She didn't want to disturb him but she wanted to make him a special dinner. She thought he'd know if he got the role and having a nice meal would go along with either outcome. She pulled out a frying pan and the vegetables she got earlier and began cutting the peppers and onions.
Tom woke to the sound of sizzling oil and the aroma of delicious food. He rubbed his eyes and stretched, not making a sound. He turned slowly to hopefully catch Fiona in a candid moment. She had headphones in her ears that led to her phone in her pocket. She was not only dancing to the music but her lips moved rapidly along with the song. Tom stifled a laugh, even though he assumed she wouldn't hear him if he did laugh out loud.
He turned the TV off and stood up, rubbing the back of his head that had fallen back against the wall during his nap.
"Fiona," he called out trying to not scare her. She didn't seem to hear him. He wasn't sure if he should yell again. Suddenly she turned from the stove and screamed at the sight of him standing between the bright kitchen and dark living room. Fiona pulled her earbuds out and let them fall over her shoulder.
"Holy fuck," she said, her breath was still shaky and fast. Her pulse raced, he had looked like a looming dark being for a second.
"I'm so sorry," Tom couldn't help but laugh.
"Can you turn those lights on now that you're up," Fiona gestured with her chin to the living room, slightly angry. Tom stepped back and flicked the switch on.
"What are you making?" He leaned his elbows on the counter top watching her cut tofu into cubes.
Fiona thought he should have apologized for earlier but it was hard to stay mad. Instead, she let him help with dinner. There were only a few days left before her flight back to New York where she would have to be miserable without him for almost 2 weeks, it didn't pay to hold a grudge. Plus, Tom was in a much better mood after his nap.
