Rose's POV
I can't wait for classes to be over. After getting off the phone with Dimitri last night, Abe had promised me, to best of his abilities, that he will get Dimitri to Russia as soon as possible. When Abe had left I spend most of the evening texting with Dimitri. I had given myself indigestion by eating my dinner as fast as I could before racing back to my room to continue texting with Dimitri.
St Basils has a really strict no cell during school hours rule, so for the first time in my life I abided by the rules and kept my phone hidden in my bag. There was no chance in hell was I going to be caught with it and hand over my only form of contact with Dimitri until the weekend.
The entire day had really dragged and I was getting moodier by the second. I had forced a smile on my face as I chatted with Alek and Sacha at lunch seeing as they were the only people to openly invite me into their social group. I wasn't sure if it was that I am a American in a Russian school that was the reason people where put off me or that Claxton, a fully fledged Guardian, was following me around.
The practical lessons were really fascinating and was the only thing that managed to distract me. Today, we were improving our spatial awareness when fighting. The training hall was covered in 8ftx8ft squares and within each square stood half of the Novices. The other half of the Novices, my half, stood in a line by the door. The lesson plan was kinda like speed dating. We are to start on one square, spar for ten minutes then move onto the next. After five wins and one loss, my loss being against a smug Sacha, I could feel my body flagging.
Flipping a smirking Sacha off, I wondered over to the next square. Stretching my shoulders, I looked up to face my last opponent, my breath caught when I saw warm brown eyes looking back at me.
"Rose." She nodded with a kind smile.
"Viktoria." I replied, with a smile of my own.
Before either of us could say anything else the Guardian blew his whistle to indicate the start of the fight.
In a normal spar situation I would begin to circle my opponent, however with such small combat area I was unable to do so. So I tried something different. Something offensive. Lunging forward, I tried to land a blow and was promptly blocked and knocked down onto the mat. Pain surged through my body, but I refused to give in to it. I jumped up again just in time before she was able to pin me. This girl is strong, definitely her brother's sister. What the hell did their mother feed them?
Viktoria aimed a few high blows which I managed to see and block easily. What I didn't see was her quick swipe to my ankles causing me to fall heavily to the ground. As I landed on my back, I could see her aim to straddle my chest. As she dropped closer to me, I felt a strange déjà vu. I was back in St. Vlads sparring with Dimitri. I had just managed to drop him and was about to straddled his chest to strike my 'killing' blow. But he simply grinned and executed this marvellous manoeuvre which ended with me on my back with his stake on my chest.
Snapping back to the present, I grabbed Viktoria's wrists and forcefully slid my body through Viktoria legs dragging her arms with me. With a quick tug, Viktoria was forced into a front flip and landed on her back hard. Without pausing, I launch myself forward and slammed my 'stake' down onto her chest above her heart.
Viktoria looked up and gasped at me with a strange look on her face. Hopping up, I quickly offered my hand. She continued to gasp at me but took my hand and let me pull her to her feet.
"Where did you learn that move?" She demanded not unkindly.
"My mentor taught me it, back in America." I replied, wondering if she was going to make the connection that Dimitri was mentor.
