In chapters 12,14,17,18, the names the Elders are mentioned occasionally and briefly by Balmong, Ha San, Han Sou, and Man Hul. The characters describe these mysterious entities as ancient and powerful beings who live way before the gods themselves. Who are they actually? Well, let authornim explain it to y'all.
The Elders, or also known as the Ancients, The Ones before the Gods, Heavenly Parents, are a group/race of beings who are far far more ancient and powerful than the gods who once ruled the world (Haneul, Yeomra, Dalnim, Mal Gu, etc)
The Elders are said to have created the world by themselves billions of years ago, and all life forms on Earth are created by their own will. They are immensely powerful, and cannot die unless they choose to. They are humble, sentient, benevolent, and most of all, almighty. To give more beauty to the world, the Elders created the gods so that they could control the balance of the world. They foresee everything, and they even foresaw that one of the gods would one day rebel against his own kind, and it was none other than Mal Gu.
After Mal Gu created a rule that anyone who dies shall become a spirit, the Elders proceeded to create humans that can see spirits and communicate with one another through telepathy, Mediums. The rules of an Inn Keeper and Grim Reaper are created by Dalnim and Yeomra respectively to give themselves a little bit of ease since whenever a god makes a celestial rule, it cannot be undone.
Some of the Elders rest in the Living Realm, while others prefer watching the world from above in the heavens and the afterlife. Each Elder has their own role, and their role is what keeps the Earth at balance.
