The Celestial War was an ancient and destructive war that waged on between the gods and the demons, happening thousands of years ago. After Mal Gu had enough of being mistreated by his own people and his father, and watching the demons, which he began to consider his own kind, be treated as animals, he and his two brothers who were also deformed like him decided to start a rebellious revolution.

And so the three demonic brothers managed to have the other demons rally with them together. Now having an army to side with him, Mal Gu and the demons plotted to destroy the gods, including his father Haneul, his brother Yeomra and his sister Dalnim.

Having noticed of their destructive attacks, the gods decided to take action and so all of them went out to war against Mal Gu and his demons. However, much to their horror, Mal Gu was too powerful to handle, having killed many gods at incredible ease. Almost all of the gods were slain, causing the remaining ones to be desperate. However, soon, other deities had then come to help them, the Avians, with also the humans they had brought with them.

With their combined forces, they managed to keep Mal Gu's forces at bay, and Yeomra and Dalnim successfully defeated Mal Gu, making him lose his left horn. To ensure the demons wouldn't return again, Haneul came to realize the mistakes he had done to his eldest sone, and to fix this, he decided to lock the demon army up in Hell and managed to defeat almost all the other kinds of demons like the Serpents, at the cost of his own life.

After that, Mal Gu's two younger brothers Borong and Go Ul Sik were imprisoned in the Eternal Ocean near the Elder Seongjae's domain for the sins they had committed. As for Mal Gu himself, he created the Spirit Rule, the rule that states that whenever someone dies, they will become a ghost. He was then banished to the Outer Realm. Years later, he would then create his five children that soon formed the group the Crescent Shadow, so that they could do the tasks Mal Gu could not do in the Living Realm, so that they would still remind everyone that he still lived.

The surviving gods went back to the heavens to mourn for their fallen loved ones, while the demons that were not locked up scattered around the world, hiding and waiting for their time to be free again.
