"Not a party again, Riya. You're grounded officially!' Mom shouted at the top of her voice. Happiest life experiences usually turn horrible for me. It happens.
Apparently, grandmom's threat didn't go waste. But that didn't trigger mom; it just helped ignite the fire. It was Kamala aunty chittering in front of everyone, which made my mom go all Hitler on me. After hearing my grandma complain about me, my dear innocent mom was heading down to our apartment's grocery shop to get some milk. I love milk and honey before I go to sleep.
'Areyy Aparajita! Come here re, long time no see! You only work re, give us some time too!' Kamala aunty shouted as she headed towards mom. My mom gave formal hi hellos. That's when that typical Indian aunty who's a disgrace to Indian aunty-folk started, 'Your daughter, areyy what her name was? Haaa... Karishma, she had friends over or what? They were shouting so much re..., my boy is in college, his exams are coming, he was disturbed very much. I'm not complaining, just telling for both of your good. She's a girl, she should maintain her dignity.'
Now, mom gets really affected by someone complaining about me. And hence she stormed back, to ground me. Dad tried to convince her, but she threatened to fight with him, too; little can I and my poor dad do in this situation.
I had no option but to cry. It was Ryan's birthday in a week, and I was planning to throw him a party at someplace. How my plans can be snapped out of existence by some random neighbor who has a college-going son. Sometimes I just want to hit restart, the restart button of life.
Sadly there ain't any.
Oh, and also, I must remind her of something. I dashed into Kamala's apartment. My mom followed me.
'Hi, beta, come in.' She said, all innocent as if she didn't know about anything happening around. Bitch.
'I don't have time for this aunty. I'm here for an essential thing, you know. Yesterday I saw your son peeing on the other side of the main road, you know. The municipality, you know, if it finds out, then there will be a lot of unnecessary trouble, you know. Your boy was studying na? How come he reached there? I hope he wasn't doing anything illegal, you know. Technically he was but, today's news shows so many things about boys doing horrible stuff na. I'm not complaining or provoking; I'm just telling for both of your good. He should maintain his dignity, na?'
I bet I saw my mom smirk under her nose and Kamala aunty turn red as I threw mud on her in her own house and left, smiling at my cynicism.
Don't mess with Karishma.
