Aiden's pov
My heart ached for Ariana as I watched her expressions just when my niece mentioned the park. She first had a smile on her face but all of a sudden, it fell into an unknown expression I could not explain myself. She looked tense and scared and even much more sad than earlier. After I walked out of the store and searched for her everywhere, I finally found her crying fearfully. Since then, I was really angry and needed to find out the reason but she refused to tell me. I looked at innocent Mary as she kept talking about that park, not really paying attention to the havoc her words were causing.
" Okay. I have heard enough stories already. Go to your room." I said to her with a frown.
" Hey, would you let me talk to my new friend. I met her before you even brought her here." She deadpanned with a frown on her face.
Mary hated being interrupted.
" Damn it Mary. Just go to your room already. I have a lot of work to do with her today." I said angrily.
" Mary? You have to let Ariana go with Aiden." Aunt Rita tried to convince her.
" You don't have to yell at me! I don't know when I would meet her again and I have to return her jacket."
" You can return that later."
" After she is gone? And I would be stuck with Kevin and Jamal again."
" I would make sure to bring her back. I promise. Now, go to your room." I said as she looked at me suspiciously.
" Shit! I just promised you. Don't give me that look." I frowned back at her.
" Aiden? Language!" Aunt Rita cautioned me. I rolled my eyes and walked Ariana to my room.
She was obviously tense judging by the way she was climbing up the stairs. Like a zombie. She wasn't paying attention to anything around her and was looking at her shoes. She was doing the same weird thing when we got out of my car.
I opened the door of my room and sat her on a chair. I bent in front of her and raised her chin to look at her.
" You still have not told me what happened at the store." I said gently and extremely cautious to not make her feel uncomfortable. She looked at me and forced a smile.
" It was just a misunderstanding." She said and averted my gaze immediately.
She was fond of doing that all the time.
" A misunderstanding with who?" I asked calmly.
" No one." She replied hesitantly and stood up.
She needed to tell me the problem. I held her two hands down to the chair and made sure she was looking at me. I didn't care if her eyes were wide, I needed my answer.
" Tell me the truth."
" Truth about what?"
" You don't expect me to just sit and watch you like this. I can't watch you get hurt." I blurted out.
She stared at me for a while and sighed.
" Why do you care anyways. It is not for you to interfere." She said with a frown, looking at her legs.
I felt hurt by her words.
" Am I interfering?"
" Yes."
" Why not look at my face and tell me again?"
" I thought we came here to prepare for the quiz?" She looked up at me.
