"Allright, I'm heading out to hunt. I'll be back in a bit" Gildarts called to Satomi from just outside the cave while he trampled the remains of their morning fire with his boot. Surprise flashed in his mind as he heard her scramble around inside.
"I'm coming too!" Gildarts couldn't help but blink in confusion at her as she came stumbling out of the cave.
"Shouldn't you be sleeping?" A frown crept onto her hopeful features as she shook her head stubbornly.
"That's all I've been doing for weeks, I'm restless. I need to do something" Gildarts spied down at her with a contemplating look. This was the first time she'd initiated to come with him on a hunt while she was still recovering.
"You can't use magic, what good will it do-"
"I'm going" Satomi cut him off with a stubborn tone, a rare occurance these days. Gildarts found himself pausing, at a loss. Initially she'd told him to not let her leave this cave until she remembered everything. But now she was saying that she wanted too.
Satomi's eyes scanned the forest covering the massive landscape at the summit of the mountain. For a moment it seemed as if her eyes returned to that usual sharpness. Gildarts pursed his lips and sighed in defeat.
"Allright. But stick close to me at all times" Satomi's features lit up and she nodded.
"I promise" Gildarts still looked at her with a conflicted expression. She'd be under his supervision the whole time, so it should be allright... If he'd been the one hauled up in a cave for over a month with nothing to do but sleep, he'd want to stretch his legs at some point too.
"Then let's go?" He motioned for her to follow him, earning a optimistic nodd.
A doubting sigh escaped him as she trailed behind him on the narrow mountain trail. No matter how many times they did this, it was never the same procedure. She'd behave differently each time. It made it impossible to know what to expect. Aside from the fact that she'd be sleeping most of the time.
On a positive note. Having her tag along would make it easier to venture further than just the area nearby. Perhaps they'd be able to catch something else than small game.
Seeing a landscape which was different from the barren mountain range was a welcome change. The green forest that now loomed over them offered a comfortable shade from the sun.
Satomi didn't talk, even when Gildarts attempted to make conversation. She remained quiet, her eyes scanning the forest curiously instead.
A few kilometers into the forest Gildarts finally spotted a deer grassing a short distance off, and motioned for Satomi to stay quiet and follow behind him.
He didn't receive a verbal confirmation, not that he'd expected one, and he inched closer to the animal. Pleased with having Satomi being this compliant on her first venture outside.
Slaying the deer was simple buisness as long as it didn't run, so catching it in a surprise attack was crucial.
The only sounds around them was the wind playing with the leaves on the trees above them, and the birds chirping.
Then a blast of magic shooting from Gildarts's hand. The large buck fell over instantly and Gildarts beamed.
"See? That's how it's done! We're going to have a feast toni-" He turned behind him. Only to find the spot where he'd been expecting to find Satomi. Empty. His jaw dropped in horror.
"Satomi!!" His shout echoed through the forest sending several flocks of birds rocketing for the sky.
