Summary: A young Jonah finds himself gushing about his best friends to his cousin
Jonah's POV
" And what exactly are you grinning about, Jonah?" One of my older cousins teased, dropping down beside me.
I was sat a little away from the rest of my mingling family, tucked against the trunk of the huge oak tree in the corner of my backyard.
The barbecue was fun and I liked having my family here, but they were loud and it was hot and I wanted to think.
" Nothing," looking over at him with a smile," just waiting and thinking about something."
" Oh no, don't nothing me. I know that look," he chuckled, pointing a finger at me while he popped open his soda with a crisp snap.
" What look?" My brows furrowing over my eyes, head tipping to the side at him.
" You were all dreamy eyed. People only get that way when their thinking about someone they really, really like. Do you get what I'm saying?"
I felt the hot flush quickly overtake my cheeks. My hands shooting up as I shook my head desperately," nononono! It's nothing like that, honest," I promised rapidly, my entire body feeling like it had been lit on fire.
Tyson laughed again, harder this time with his hand pressed to his stomach, chest filling with each cackle, promting a few curious glances from some of the others.
I looked down at the grass, playing with my fingers, not wanting to catch a single gaze. I wanted to tell him to shut up, but that would get me in trouble.
But it wasn't fair!
" I'm just teasing you, Jonie," he grinned brightly, warmly. Draping a large, strong arm over my shoulders," you're just to easy, kid," pinching gently at my still burning cheeks.
I swatted at him, pushing my body into his, pouting up at the older boy," well, you aren't funny. And don't call me kid."
He only ruffled my hair, offering a drink of his grape Fanta with the other hand," seriously though, who were you thinkin' about?"
I took it eagerly, pressing my lips to the cool aluminum. Swallowing a mouthful of the bubbling fluid. The sweetness bathing my dry tongue.
" My friends," I answered finally, wiping at my mouth with the back of my hand with a soft burp.
I had forgiven him completely now. After all, he had given me more soda even though Mom had said no. I would tell him just about anything he wanted.
" Oh yeah?" Reaching out for the can," what are their names?"
" Corbyn, Jack, Daniel, and Zach," the list coming easily while I passed the drink back.
" 4, huh? You have more friends than me when I was your age," another low chuckle, eyes drifting to the small gathering," tell me about them?"
" Yeah, okay," that made me grin, turning my gaze up to the rusting bright green above," well, Daniel's the oldest out of all of us," I began, absently playing with my fingers.
" He's shorter than me and he has blue eyes. They're really pretty, too. They remind me of the ocean, but better. He also has a gap that he absolutely hates, but I like it. I think it makes his smile cuter," I could feel the grin blossoming brighter across my cheeks. Trying to remember all the weird little things Daniel always did.
" He loves apple juice, like, more than anyone I've ever met. He loves it so much that he can't get to sleep if he doesn't have a cup of it before bed. Isn't that weird?" I laughed, rolling my head over to stare at the larger boy.
