With the theme of nostalgia in mind, I decided to review their first EP.
Also, I just want an excuse to listen to all of their songs and review them. And for what its worth, it was a rather pleasant experience.
If you couldn't tell already, I'm going to be giving my thoughts on Why Don't We's first EP, Only The Beginning. The title isn't original, not in the slightest, but that doesn't really matter much, does it?
The Categories
Lyrics: The pacing, vocals, and the high note if there is one.Substance: The song's ability to hold your attention, properly express its message, the message itself, and the song's tendency to repeat itself.
Beat: Is it bloated? Do all the elements blend together?
Originality: Whether or not you can tell it apart from other songs of a similar theme, as well as how likely it is that you'll remember it.
Enjoyment: Is the song fun to listen to? Just because it's awful doesn't mean you can't enjoy it.
Video: Does it fit the song? Is it creative? Is it fun to watch?
Also, one full star in each category is worth one-fifth (.2) of a final star. The videos don't affect the overall score.
Now, let us begin.
1. Taking You- 3/5
Lyrics: 5/5
Notes
The vocals are nice, they always are in their songs. Despite this, they're really boring. The boys don't sound like their actually singing, just kinda like their talking. For a first song it does a bad job of showing their vocal ranges, but it somewhat makes up for it at the endSubstance: 2/5
Notes
The same set of lyrics is repeated twice in this song and they get really old really fast. I can give the last chorus some leeway because it at least tries to be different, but the message is boring and so are the lyrics. They aren't nearly good enough to be listened to twiceBeat: 3/5
Notes
There's too much going on at any given moment and the elements don't really blend that well, but its funOriginality: 0/5
Notes
There isn't any, not even a little bitEnjoyment: 5/5
Notes
The song's funVideo: .5/5
Notes
Honestly, I would've given it a zero if wasn't a halfway decent first video, but its a bad video for its song. It has nothing to do with the themes of Taking You, but it does give you a chance to look at them as a group and just watch them. So, while its a terrible video in the context of its song, its a decent, but not great introduction of sorts to the band2. Nobody Gotta Know- 3.8/5
Lyrics: 4/5
Notes
They sound good. Their harmony isn't as nice as it is now and days, but that's to be expectedSubstance: 2/5
Notes
The same set of lyrics is repeated, the only difference between the verses is the boy singing, and the message is boring. The one thing they have to sing is good, but not good enough to hear it twice
