I've missed you

"Dammit B, I just left!" I said holding the phone closer to my ear and slammed the door vigorously with the other hand.
"Will you call her for me? I really don't have the strength for another one... it would be the tenth today..." I said leaning against the door.
I heard her saying yes from the other side of the phone and it reminded me how glad I was she had made it through this new disease that was spreading and killing people worldwide.
"Babe what happened?" Sarah peaked in the corridor from the kitchen door.

In that moment I realized how much time had passed since the last time she had touched me... not only romantically but even normally like she was doing in that moment.
"Another one of my patients died" I said swallowing the lump that had formed in my throat.

I have to call dozens of family every day to tell them their mom, dad, son or daughter has died and they can't even be there for their last moments" I cried.
"Babe, babe, calm down... please, Vanessa's in the kitchen we don't want to scare her" Sarah said stroking my hair.
I sniffled and pulled away from the hug, I dried my tears and asked "how do I look?" I said with a light chuckle because I knew very well I looked horrible and most of all sleep deprived.
"You look absolutely gorgeous and I- I've missed you" she said and her eyes watered this time. I didn't quite get what she meant because of course I worked many hours and wasn't home every night but I tried my best to spend time with them and be as present as possible.
"Vanessa is probably wondering where we are" I said taking a mental note to discuss that later.
We went back in the kitchen and Vanessa greeted me with the strongest hug "Look, we made a cake" she said pulling me to the table to show me the cake.
"Wow, I must say this looks delicious honey" I said and looked at Sarah, that was actually one of the first times she managed to bake a cake without burning it up completely. She winked lightly and showed me the several timers she had set on her phone in order not to forget the cake in the oven.
"Do you think it tastes good?" I asked to Vanessa.
"I think so, we made everything we had to" she said.
"I'm sure you did, what about we all have a piece now and then you go to bed like the good little girl you are?" I proposed. I knew we didn't give her sugar before going to bed but we really needed time to talk and there was no way I was going to convince Vanessa to go to bed without a taste of that cake.
We ate together and contrarily to any expectation that tasted like the most delicious thing I had had in a while given most of my meals were hospital food or at best what they served in the cafeteria.
"Now... I'm not exaggerating when I say this is THE BEST cake I've ever eaten" I said tickling Vanessa and she laughed.
"Yay! Did you really like it?"
"Of course baby, I absolutely loved it" I said planting a kiss on her forehead.
"Now you have to be a good girl for me, go wash your teeth and go to bed because it is super late and you shouldn't be up" I said and she nodded.
That was easy, thank goodness.
"Yes I'll go to bed, I'm tired, but I wanted to wait for you to come home, I never see you, mommy" she said and the sound of that name she used made my heart melt instantly.
"I miss you too baby but you'll see when this whole thing is over we're going to spend so much more time together" I said hugging her tightly.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
She smiled and left to go to the bathroom.
We waited to hear the sound of her closing the door to her room after washing her teeth in a very awkward silence that I couldn't stand.
"So before... you said you've missed me" I spoke first "and it didn't sound just like you missed me because I work a lot, it sounded like there was more and I wanna know what it is".
"It's just that..." Sarah tried to say but the matter clearly made her nervous so she hesitated and that made me assume the worst.
"Sarah you're making me so nervous... please..." I begged her to find the words to tell me whatever made her feel uncomfortable.
"It's just that I think we're losing our... our connection, our spark" she said and looked down while I felt my heart miss a beat.
"Are you saying you don't love me anymore?" I asked trying to keep my cool because I didn't want to freak out too soon.

"And thank you for telling me but maybe you need to elaborate a little more" I said.
"You really don't feel it too? We never have time to be together... like that. You're always working and when you're home you're so tired you barely have the energy to do basic things. I take care of Vanessa all day because we're quarantined and otherwise I'd be useless and I'm happy to do it, really" she looked at me intensely "I love being able to spend time with her but I'd love to spend some time with you too... that's all" she said framing my face with her hands again.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't notice you felt neglected by me... I'd never make you feel this way intentionally. You're the most important person in the world for me... I love you so much" I said hugging her tightly and she buried her face between my neck and my shoulder her soft lips leaving little kisses on my skin.
"Please forgive me, I love you more than anything" I said.
"I have nothing to forgive you for, God knows how hard you work every day and I see this situation is new and overwhelming for you more than anyone else. I just need to know you're okay, that we're okay" she said and smiled softly making me relax a little.
"We can be okay, I need your support, now more than ever" I said leaning my forehead against hers.
"I got you babe" she said and I finally closed the gap between us and kissed her.
She didn't waste time and she soon deepened the kiss keeping me in place so that I couldn't pull away but I had no intention to. I grabbed her hips and pulled her closer to me she pulled away from the kiss and made an embarrassed giggle "wow it's been this long?" I chuckled "well... we better refresh your memory" I said with a playful smirk and pushed her against the wall.
"Oh!" She gasped and began to kiss me again, more passionate and lustful than ever. I traced her body with my hands and I blocked her arms just above her head, she tried to let go of the control she craved so much in our intimacy and let me be in charge of everything this time. I lifted her up without breaking the kiss, she wrapped her legs around my waist and a little moan escaped her lips.
"Hold that thought, babe" I smiled and took her to our bedroom. I put her down on the bed and went to lock the door before going back to her.
"We'll have to be quiet" she giggled softly.
"Is that a problem, darling?" I asked giving her a daring smirk.
"I'll do my best, I promise" she chuckled.
"Very well..." I whispered in her ear before pulling her shirt over her head and beginning to kiss her chest. Getting lower and lower I slid her pants down and kissed my way back to her neck. She helped me take off my shirt too and soon we were both in our underwear. I kissed her neck again and started rubbing her center, Sarah's knuckles turned white from gripping on the blankets.
