Leorio could tell something was up with Abby. He knows she's smart enough to not go for a run with a concussion. She microwaved bacon! That is something she wouldn't have done if her life depended on it in most cases.
The whole day was like this. When they went to town, Abby didn't stop to admire the building she wanted. When they busted Kurapika she stayed silent. They seemed to do everything he wanted, completely ignoring her own wishes.
As the couple sat in the living room before bed, Abby finally spoke up. "You heard what Kurapika said, when he admitted he still had feelings for you, right?" She asked, not making eye contact with Leorio.
"Yeah, and?" Leorio searched Abby's face, looking for anything that might suggest what she was going to say next.
"You still love him. I can tell." Her voice cracked at the end as she tried not to cry.
"What are you saying? You know I love you." Leorio moved over next to Abby, trying to get her to look at him.
"Leorio, I think we need to break up." Abby started crying as she finished, and she buried her face in her hands.
"What?" Leorio was speechless. "You can't do this. Not right now." Leorio was bow tearing up as well. "I need you." He whispered.
"You need Kurapika! And he needs you!" Abby countered. "I'll be fine. Fine." Abby whispered, pulling her knees close to her chests she began to sob.
Leorio was speechless. Abby couldn't break up with him. He needed her.
"Abby." Leorio whispered after a while.
"Yes?" Abby asked through her tears, still not making eye contact.
"Is the floor really that interesting?" Abby glared at the floor. "Okay, okay. You shouldn't cry. It'll only make the concussion worse." Abby burst out laughing when Leorio said this.
"What?" Leorio began to chuckle. Abby was laughing so hard she was in tears.
"It's just that... we just broke up and all you can think about is my stupid head!" Abby sat down on the floor, holding her stomach as she laughed. Leorio smiled, which turned into a laugh as he realized Abby was right. They just broke up, but he was only thinking about her head.
That is when it finally hit him. Abby and him are done. There is no more 'them' or 'us'. Leorio stopped laughing abruptly. He instead let tears begin to fall.
"So," Leorio began. "I guess I'll get a hotel for tonight then." Leorio stood up and Abby stopped laughing. She stared as Leorio went into what used to be their bedroom to grab some stuff.
"Leorio, wait!" Abby called, reaching for his arm. "I'll sleep on the couch. You can stay in the bedroom. I'll even be gone in the morning if you want. Just stay for tonight. Please?" Abby gave Leorio her best puppy dog eyes, which always worked on him.
"Fine. You win." Leorio laughed, rolling his eyes. "But I sleep on the couch. This is your apartment, after all."
"I think you just think the couch is more comfortable." Abby laughed, putting her hands on her hips playfully.
Leorio put his hands up in surrender. "Fine, you caught me." He laughed. "But, I have one question."
"Yeah?" Abby looked up at Leorio. She was going to miss him alright.
"Can it always be like this?" Leorio spread his arms. "Can we still be friends? And not like the kind who say they're going to still be friends but secretly hate each other. I mean real friends." Abby smiled and nodded her head before giving Leorio a hug.
"Yeah, we can." Leorio hugged her back, never wanting that moment to end.
Leorio left early the next morning, going to search for a new apartment for cheap. He found one on the opposite side of town from both Abby and Kurapika, which was not ideal, but it was the best he could do.
Abby and Kurapika helped him move in the next day. By the afternoon it was actually starting to look nice.
Abby had showed up at dawn to deep clean. Leorio was asleep during all of this, and by the time he woke up Kurapika had shown up as well.
If Leorio hadn't told him, Kurapika wouldn't have believed the two broke up. They acted like lifelong friends. Kurapika could tell something was up with Leorio though. Whether it was the stress from the breakup and moving, or school, he couldn't tell. All Kurapika wanted to do was reach out and comfort Leorio, but everything was still fresh.
Kurapika desperately wanted to tell Leorio how he feels about him, that he could come and stay with him, that the bed gets colder every night without him.
Even if both Abby and Kurapika could see who Leorio loved most, Leorio himself couldn't. He was blind. He couldn't chose. But buried deep inside of him, Leorio has known who it was all along.
