Writer's POV:
Everything was fine between them, he would take her with him on the tournaments, he would go to the bar with her, he would bring her to his apartment and all his friends knew about her. She was ready to leave everything for him, her house , her work and all her time. She really loved him, more than he did. The people who played chess always said that Benny Watts was back on his track just because of one woman and they knew that it was Y/n. After Beth left him, he was depressed. He left playing chess, he kept drinking alcohol, he lost track of time and he blocked everyone out. He built high walls around himself which were impossible to break.
Until one day, he met her outside a bar. He was drunk. She was sober. He was stumbling, sobbing over his ex-, Beth Harmon who left him for Harry Beltik. Y/n was there, she watched him sitting on the bench, bawling his eyes out. She didn't knew what came to her mind but she knew that he needed help, even if he didn't ask for it. Several thoughts came to her mind, whether she should stay where she was or go and talk to him. He was drunk, cold and drenched in the heavy rain. She pushed all her thoughts aside and went to him, holding an umbrella in her hand. She stretched her arm out a little so that the umbrella would cover his head too.
He noticed it. He looked up and saw a pair of beautiful eyes looking at him. She sat herself beside him, still holding the umbrella over his head. "You shouldn't be here, it's cold tonight."she said. He wiped away the tears that flowed endlessly down his pale cheeks. "Why are you here?"he slurred. "You looked like you needed someone to take you home."she mumbled until he looked directly into her eyes. He gazed at her, she looked quite innocent and genuinely concerned about him.
"I don't want to go home."he sighed and looked down. "Why don't you stay at my place tonight? In the living room, I have a nice couch."y/n said. "It's okay, I'll be fine here."he sobbed. "Hey, look at me, let me help you, I don't know what you're going through but I'm pretty sure that you shouldn't stay out here tonight."she smiled and got up from the seat, extending her hand out for him to grab. " Will you please hear what happened to me?"he asked. "Yes, ofcourse I'll hear everything, come on."she said. He grabbed her hand and they kept walking down a few blocks.
He told her how Beth left him two months ago. How she used him and broke him apart. After sometime, they reached y/n 's apartment and she welcomed him inside. She turned on the heater in the living room, gave him some dry clothes to wear, made some soup for him while he made himself comfortable with the blankets on the couch."So, you live with your boyfriend here?" he asked. His voice sounded like he drank a lot of alcohol in the past months.
"Uh, no."she said. He gestured towards the clothes that y/n gave him. "They're my father's, he gone away for work." Y/n giggled. She went in her room and got changed into some warm clothes. When she came downstairs to check on Benny, he was already fast asleep on the couch. She smiled and put the blankets on him, making sure that he felt warm. "I hope everything gets better and you fall in love with someone all over again."she mumbled and turned off the lights before going back to her room.
Two years later:
They were in love, or atleast y/n was in love with Benny. One day he came back from a tournament in Paris and y/n was waiting for him in his apartment. Little did she knew that her world was just about to fall apart. Benny opened the door with his keys, knowing that she was busy cooking dinner for him. "Hello, sweetheart." Y/n greeted him and kissed him on the cheek. He smiled at her and took his hat off. "I -uh , um, I wanted to say something."he said. She gazed at him, waiting patiently for him to start talking. "I can't be with you anymore."he looked down at his fingers and played with his ring. Y/n knew what he was talking about since her eyes had already started glistening with tears.
"What do you mean?" she asked, her voice already starting to sound weak. "I don't know how to tell you this but, I met Beth in Paris and I realized that I never fell in love with you. You were just...a distraction."he sighed. Those words pricked her heart like a thousand needles. "After all these years? Can't you see that I was there when she left you?" Y/n raised her voice, realising that she was nothing but a temporary distraction."Look, I'm done explaining, she's going to be here tomorrow morning and I want you to leave."he looked away with a stern expression on his face. Somewhere he knew that he was making a huge mistake, deep down he knew that going back to that woman wasn't good. He knew that he deserved better, he deserved y/n. But he wasn't madly in love with Beth, he was blindly in love.
Y/n knew she made a mistake, she should have never looked at that broken man bawling his eyes out that night. That night she found her first love and he found a distraction. She was hurt, so hurt that she could fall on the floor and cry over this man who didn't care about her. But she knew that she wasn't a weakling. She loved him enough to let him be happy with Beth. She didn't want to breakdown in front of him, didn't want to show him that she was weak. "I love you and I always will."she said and stood on her tip toes, kissing him on the cheek one last time before taking her handbag, wearing her coat and walking out of his apartment, making sure never to look back at him.
Benny's POV:
The next night I went out with Beth to the same bar that I had been going to from the past many years of my life. Even though New York was a huge city, I loved that spot. Beth drank a lot that night and I decided to stay sober. It was pouring down heavily and it was time for us to go home. I got up and Beth clung to my arm, unable to walk due to all the drinks that she had. I lifted her up bridal style and carried her to my car, placing her inside quickly because I didn't want her to get drenched in the rain. I went to the other side and sat in my seat, ready to start the engine.
But then my eyes caught a glimpse of someone sitting on a bench, the same bench I used to sit on. I knew who it was, it was her, y/n. She was sobbing silently, her hands covering her face. I looked at Beth who was asleep beside me and then I looked back at the girl who I abandoned. And at that moment I realized that had lost the one who really loved me. Since then I saw her everyday, on the same bench, sometimes crying, sometimes just staring at the ground. She was the one who fixed me and I broke her, so much that I knew she wouldn't be the same anymore.
