"Give it back!" I reached out for it but he pulled his arm away from my reach.

"Nuh-uh darlin', not so soon. You're not getting away this time." he gave his infamous smirk.

Your Pov:

"What do you want Benny?" I asked impatiently.

We maintained an eye contact for a minute until he leaned closer and looked at Jolene who was sitting right beside me. "Come with me and I'll give it back to you." he whispered.

"She ain't going anywhere with you!" Jolene whisper-yelled, making sure not to disturb the silence in the auditorium.

"Okay, I'm coming." I said.

Jolene gave me a look and I nodded. Both of us got up to follow him out but he stopped my friend. "Y/l/n, come alone." he insisted.

"No, I won't." I said.

"Look, you want this or not?" he waved my diary again and I failed to grasp it from his hand...again.

"Fine. Jolene, stay here with Beth. She needs atleast one of us. I'll be fine." I assured her.

"What? No! I'm not leaving YOU alone!" she protested.

"Don't you want me to get that back from him? Besides, I'll slap him if he tries to do anything." I said.

"But-"

"No butts, Jo. I'll be fine." I said. And before she could stop me, I turned around to walk with Benny.

He grabbed my hand and got me out of the auditorium. Then we went up the stairs. "Let go off me! I can walk on my own!" I pulled out my hand forcefully.

He shot a glare and pulled me by the arm anyways. "I'm going to introduce you to my friends." he smirked devilishly.

"I don't want to meet your stupid friends!" I muttered under my breath.

We walked down a long corridor and then turned left. I recognised where we were. The giant open balcony.

A woman, probably a couple of years older than me had a cigarette in between her fingers. As she saw us coming, she signalled the man standing in front of us who's back was facing us. She rubbed the cigarette's butt against the railing and threw it out of the balcony.

The man had long brown hair and he was quite tall. "Ah, Benny! Is this the depressed chic who writes about you in her diary?" the man mocked.

"Come on Arthur, play nice." Benny said in a mocking tone as well. "Meet y/n. Y/n y/l/n, the one who's obsessed with me." Benny said.

"This is Arthur and that's Cleo." Benny looked at me and then looked at them.

"What the fuck Benny! Just give me my diary. I'm not going to shake hands with them." I spat when Arthur extended his arm.

"Getting straight to the point now are we?" Cleo said.

"You guys want me to read it for you? Come on Arthur, why don't you hold her while I read it out for you?" Benny pushed me in Arthur's arms who turned me around and held my arms, my back was against his chest.

"No! Give it back! Let me go loser!" I wiggled in his grip. "Shut your hole before I punch you in the face, y/l/n." Cleo snickered.

"Dear diary, sometimes it feels like everything's against me. I lost my job today. All because of my worst nightmare, Benny Watts. Working at a pastry shop was so fun. But today, he found out that I worked there and he accused that I was being rude to him. My stupid boss was already a pain in the arse and now she managed to find out something against me. So she fired me. And now, I don't even know how I'm going to pay my part of the rent. I can't put it all on Beth." Benny mimicked in my tone.

"Aw, poor you." Arthur whispered.

"I bet she's still jobless. Running behind that Harmon girl all the time." Cleo said.

My eyes were glistening with tears, they threatened to fall, I struggled so hard not to break in front of those idiots.

In the next few seconds, I was out of Arthur's grip, I didn't knew when my palm collided with Benny's cheek, his face turned red and my diary dropped out of his hand.

"OoOoohhh!" his friends reacted.

"You fucking loathsome prick." I said through my gritted teeth, picked up my diary and ran away.

This isn't going to end well. I thought.

For the first time in my life, I stood up against him.

Was it hard to stand up for yourself?

Nah, it wasn't.

But this won't end well.

Your Pov:

"So you actually slapped him?!" Beth's mouth was wide open.

"Yes, I did. I shouldn't have done it." I sighed.

"Nonsense. What you did was right. He was being an arse." Jolene said as she hugged me.

"Who are you playing against tomorrow?" I asked Beth.

"I'll be playing against that prick and I'll show him his place tomorrow." Beth said confidently.

*Time skip to next morning

Your Pov:

"Help me putting this on, Jolene!" Beth said. Jolene helped her to style the scarf that she usually wears.

"Come on, we're gonna be late." I said.

As we rushed downstairs to the auditorium, I thought about how proud I was. My best friend was going to kick his arse today.

"Don't worry. I know how to tackle him down. I've been working on his tactics a lot." Beth said to Jolene who looked a little worried.

"Group hug?" I chimed in.

"Yup, much needed." Jolene said.

We hugged for a few seconds and then she went in first. A lot of cameras flashed lights on her and many reporters asked different questions.

Me and Jolene got in from the other door which was open for the spectators to enter. We found a couple of front seats and got ourselves seated. A minute later, the current US champion, Benny Watts, entered. He shook hands with Beth and then the game began.

The first half was quite intense. She looked stressed, as if she was trying to read his mind. He had a blank expression, he was looking at her while she shifted nervously. As if he was looking into her soul. Then she made a quick move with the knight. The tables turned, she manipulated him for an exchange of queens.

A couple of minutes later, Benny extended his arm. "Tough game." he said. Jolene cheered and so did I . "We got a new champion!" A man yelled. He smiled at Beth and then she was surrounded by reporters again.

They clicked pictures of Beth and Benny and he didn't look disappointed. He looked... happy. Like he was expecting her to win against him.

Obviously she was going to win. She's The Beth Harmon. I thought.

*Time skip to dinner

Your Pov:

Tonight we celebrated for Beth. This day meant so much to her, it meant so much to me. We had a lovely dinner in one of the finest restaurants in LA. Beth and Jolene stayed back to get drunk but I decided to get back to the hotel. I guess I was just not in the mood.

On my way back to the room, a cold hand gripped me and yanked me inside a small, dark place. The janitor's closet.

I was about to scream but he slurred.

"Y/l/n, you think you can embarrass me and get away with it?"
