his right hand still clutches the blade, knuckles white from grasping on so tightly. he draws in a breath, almost humored, as he looks toward the girl who is momentarily speechless.

she blinks slowly, and he can almost see the wheels turning in her brain - processing what had just happened.

she looks at her hands, palms scraped up from when she landed harshly on the concrete. she surveys them, flipping them from palm to back a few times before letting out a baited breath.

"thanks," she says quietly, so quiet he might not have heard her. but he did hear her. he was always attentive to his surroundings. "who knows what they would've done if you hadn't showed up," she continues, now shoving her bloodied hands into the pockets of her wool jacket.

if he hadn't known about her, more specifically about her family, he would have mistaken her for a soc. she certainly looked the part.

"what are friends for?" he says with a hint of pride hidden beneath the small smile that grows on his lips.

"i'm your friend?" she draws quietly. "why would you wanna be my friend? didn't you hear what they just said? i'm a freak, and my family is a bunch of freaks."

"that's exactly why you're my friend," he laughs. it wasn't his normal, joking laugh, but it was the kind of laugh that made you feel welcome. the kind of laugh that made you feel understood.

she rolled her eyes. she wasn't annoyed, it was more of a "you're an idiot" eye roll that couldn't be mistaken for pettiness or insincerity.

he knew that.
just like he knew they would become fast friends.
