if your villain and your readers arent able to connect to some extent, then youre writing a failed villain.
(im refraining from saying the word relatable, but you get the idea)
the most interesting part about a villain is seeing what led them there, and seeing their story. if your readers cant feel at least a bit of empathy for your villain, youre already not going to have a good story. a good villain should leave your readers wondering what exactly separates them from the protagonist. they should be able to make your readers understand what led them to where they are, and sympathise with them on a level. what makes a villain interesting, is having them feel something that hits too close to home.
