okay here's another slightly controversial attempt at brown girl power?? lmk what you think... i wrote this a super long time ago hah...

why are we who they
want us
to be?
we said
f*ck the man
f*ck the glass ceiling
f*ck the norms
yet it's still the
girls with the
skinniest waists
and bluest eyes
that get ahead
don't get me wrong
they deserve the
world
just as much as
the rest of us
but they're
getting the world
whereas we are
not
why are we
conforming
to the mold that we
are destined to
defy?
we are letting down
girls
the ones that
come after us
and the ones
walking
by our sides
we are letting down
our future
daughters
sisters
best friends
and for what?
why are we
tearing people
down
to bring ourselves
up?
i thought we were
better
than this
i thought with a
little bit of
glitter nail polish
and some
hair dye
we could make
miracles
we could make
magic
we could
change something
but i guess we
put away our
nail polish
and redyed our
hair again
and everything is
the same
why are we letting
others
define us
and our choices
and our likes
our wants
our desires?
i thought we said
we weren't going to
do that
anymore
i thought we said
we
were going to be
different
than those who
came before us
we promised not to
be a letdown
the way our
foremothers
were to us
but all i see in us
is a letdown
stuck on
social media
and
likes
waiting for
validation
don't get me
wrong
we all need
validation
sometimes
but we should validate
others
as well as ourselves
uplift
others
because that is
where the change
comes
i'm not trying to sound
preachy
but
this is not just a
poem
it's a call to
action
because we've been
complacent
for too long
why are we who they
want us
to be?

f*ck the norms
be who you
are
be who you
want to be
but keep in mind
that when a new
generation
of little girls
searches your name
you want them to find
your art
your change
your impression on the
world
not a video of you
throwing it
back
