********************************

poets aren't

good at

goodbyes

why do you

think

we write?

if we could

let go

the way you

do

the way you

did

then what

is there

to write

about?

we could

write about

survivors

but we write

about ourselves

because

we are

survivors

in a way

i guess

because

poets

are the

broken people

born of

believers

not in god, no

believers in

fairy tales

or we were

once

some people

are born of

whistles

the smack

of a wooden

bat

soccer balls

flying

across short

grass

paints and

stained hands

but poets

are born of

the light

just after

sunset

and the

darkness

before the

dawn

the in-between

moments

that nobody

notices

but those are

the moments

that make

life

worth

living

we're born of

broken hearts

and

broken promises

and pain

of the clack

of typewriter

keys

on the second

story

of your

grandmother's

house

of coffee circle

stains

on manuscripts

and the smell

of fresh ink

on the pages

of new books

and asking

a poet

why they

write

is like

asking them

to unravel

the fabric

of their soul

and hand it

to you

thread

by

thread

by

thread

and if you

succeed

then keep

those threads

close to your

heart

and never

ever

let them go

because a

poet

has already been

hurt before

and broken heartstrings

only offer

so much

love

before they

snap

for good

you'll be jotted

down

in lines

short pieces

of prose

to preserve you

within the pages

eternally

you'll be kept

in photos and

memories

close to hearts

even though

they've moved

on now and they're

better off

so no

poets are not

good

at goodbyes

the way other

people are

but perhaps that's

beautiful

because

without it

we wouldn't have

poetry
